Currently having an issue with my undo/history function. I seem to only be able to go back 2 or 3 commands before the entire history disappears. pls help!

Correct answer Abhishek Rao

Hi @marty2015 and everyone,

Thanks for sharing the update, and I’m sorry to hear the issue is still occurring. I wanted to pass along the latest update from the product team regarding the Undo/History behavior in Adobe InDesign.

You can review their detailed findings and guidance here:
https://community.adobe.com/questions-671/indesign-21-2-undo-greyed-out-and-history-panel-blank-on-macos-tahoe-and-ventura-1551926?postid=7543173#post7543173

To help move this forward, the team would like to conduct a debugging session to capture deeper diagnostics in affected environments.

If you’re experiencing this issue, could you please let me know if you’d be open to a short session with the team?

If you’re available, please share your email address, contact number (with country code), and your availability via DM so I can coordinate this further.

Really appreciate your time and support on this. I’ll keep you posted with any updates.

Abhishek

Still experiencing this in INDD 21.3 (and the previous 3 versions). Is this ever going to get addressed? It’s a nightmare. Feel like Adobe is just giving up on human creators and pivoting towards an all AI focus. I’m on a Mac mini running latest Tahoe.

Hi @JasonCarr,

Thanks for sharing the details and sorry to hear that you experience this. I came across a similar discussion here that might be relevant to what you're experiencing:
https://community.adobe.com/questions-671/indesign-21-2-undo-greyed-out-and-history-panel-blank-on-macos-tahoe-and-ventura-1551926?postid=7514324#post7514324

Could you please go through that thread and confirm if the behavior matches what you're seeing on your end?

If it does, a bug has already been logged for this issue and the team is actively working on it. I’ll keep you posted here as soon as I have any updates.

Thanks again for your patience.

Abhishek

Hi JUVE-Quan,

Sorry for the trouble. This was the known issue that got fixed with the InDesign 21.2 update and was tracked here. Would you mind updating and letting us know if the issue is resolved for you?

We will be happy to help.

Thanks,

Harshika

I’m currently having this problem in version 21.2. VERY PROBLEMATIC!

The whole application feels very tetchy.

I’m having the same issue on ID 2026.  Win11.  Can’t do more than 4 undo actions.  All documents, old and new.  And ID 2026 can’t convert to IDML to reopen in ID 2025.

Have you installed the 21.2 update? It’s supposed to be fixed with that.

In addition to other questions: how much RAM and free disk space do you have?

@iosefa

What if you hit Ctrl+Z few times - can you undo more than is displayed on the History panel?

To add to @Robert at ID-Tasker suggestion, can you REDO with the keyboard command?

Also, this is a long shot but the Magnet app on Mac has been causing tons of problems. Do you have it installed?

Hi @iosefa,

Sorry to hear about the issue. This typically occurs when the document is closed. Did you happen to close the document or experience a crash? For more information, please visit: Undo History Panel in InDesign.

Hi @iosefa,

Thank you for sharing the details! Could you let us know:

  1. The version of InDesign you’re using.
  2. Your operating system (e.g., Windows 11, macOS Ventura).
  3. Does this issue occur in all documents or only a specific one? What about newly created documents?

Also, have you tried resetting your preferences? If not, you can follow the steps here: Reset InDesign Preferences.

Let us know how it goes!

Best,
Abhishek Rao
