P: LrC 15.6 Preview does not render for images with specific Content Credentials

Lightroom previews won’t stop “Loading.” And these are minimal-size previews, which I created when this problem started with 1:1 previews after I removed all the files from Lightroom and re-imported them. And, when I attempt to build 1:1 previews, even if I only select one, the progress bar doesn’t move at all or gets stuck. This issue just started up a day or two ago.

A special thanks indeed to @johnrellis for helping me figure out why this was happening. And to others for their suggestions as well, all of which were attempted but to no avail. So it was indeed a frustrating 24-hour period!

LR stalls trying to build Library previews for JPEGs created by Nano Banana, apparently stumbling over the content credentials embedded in the JPEGs. To reproduce in LR 15.6 / Mac OS 26.6.2:

    1.  Download and unzip the attached tiny catalog.

    2. Open the catalog.

    3. Select the photo “no-jumbf.jpg” and do Library > Previews > Build Standard-Sized Previews. Observe that it completes correctly.

    4. Select the photo “Generated Image October 12, 2026 - 11_11PM.jpg” and do Build Standard-Sized Previews. Observe that it never completes:

The photo “no-jumbf.jpg” is a copy of “Generated Image October 12, 2026 - 11_11PM.jpg” with the JUMBF metadata section (containing the content credentials) removed using Exiftool:

    exiftool -jumbf:all= no-jumbf.jpg

Very interesting. At least it wasn’t my imagination. Or my computer. Even without the preview, it opens fine in Photoshop. Thanks for this!

If you have one of the Nano Banana files creating the problem, please attach it here. If we can reproduce the problem, then it’s more likely Adobe will fix it.

I deleted them, but I’ll check my history on NB 2.1 to see if they are still available.

Well this is going to sound weird, but I think I found the problem. The issue began after I imported some files created with the new Nano Banana 2.1, which I finally realized were the only files that were having trouble creating previews. So I imported them into Photoshop, copied and pasted them into a new Photoshop window, resaved them with updated file names, and imported them back into Lightroom. Then I deleted the original files. Now Lightroom (at least for the last couple of hours) has been running at a reasonable 4% or 5% CPU usage. Go figure.

Your System Info shows "GPU for Preview Generation: Auto". Since Develop looks fine and only the Library previews fail, try setting Preferences > Performance > Use GPU for Preview Generation to Off, restart Lightroom Classic, and rebuild previews for a few of the bad photos.

Please clarify your post. Are you using Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)? Where does this problem appear: Library Module, Develop Module, somewhere else?

This sounds like a damaged preview cache. It survives removing and re-importing the photos because it lives in its own file next to the catalog, not in the catalog itself.

Quit Lightroom Classic. In the folder that holds your catalog (the .lrcat file) there is an item called "<your catalog name> Previews.lrdata". Rename it to something like "Previews-old.lrdata". Start Lightroom again: it creates a fresh, empty preview cache. Previews rebuild as you browse, or select the photos and use Library > Previews > Build Standard-Sized Previews.

If that fixes it, delete the old one. If it doesn't, check the free space on the drive that holds the catalog, since preview building stalls when that drive is nearly full.

Yep, I tried deleting the lrcat file. No go. The drive where I save the Lightroom files has over 1 TB of space available.

Do you have really delete the .lrcat file? This is your Lightroom catalog.Try to restore the catalog from the trash or from the latest backup.

Then do what @davidmaizil wrote: rename or delete the folder <your catalog name> Previews.lrdata". Lightroom restore the preview cache automatically.

Please be more specific. Are you talking about Lightroom (Lr icon) or Lightroom Classic (LrC icon)? Does this happen in the Library Module or the Develop Module or the Import dialog box or somewhere else?

Sorry. Lightroom Classic. It happens in the Library Module. Assets look fine in the Develop Module, but when I return to the Library Module, the assets is still low-res or “Loading.” Even after “successfully” building a 1:1 preview, the asset still looks low-res. It doesn’t happen ALL assets, but most, and assets imported weeks, months, or even years ago work fine.
