Question

Denoise AI taking 23 minutes for Canon R5 raw

I have a quite fast Intel based Windows 11 machine. No external GPU - just the built in CPU GPU. I have 16 gb of RAM. This CPU (8700k) is quite fast and I have normally no issues editing my 45 megapixel R5 images.

Noise reduction in Topaz is also quite fast - no issues there.

I tried the new denoise ai function in LR today and it is exceptionally slow. It estimated 23 minutes (!) to denoise one picture. I thought that there must be some mistake - but it seems to be correct. I started it but had to cancel it. Topaz uses maybe 30 seconds on same job.

One can say that you need a good GPU - but there must be something else also wrong here in implementation. It is not possible that it should take 23 minutes with this CPU. Also just opening the denoise dialogue takes maybe 1 minute with "loading enhance data" or something similar.

Any similar experience? Maybe LR is not able to utilize the built in GPU somehow. But even CPU only should be faster? I have also issues with the "detect sky" or "detect subject" functions which sometimes are very slow. Might be related?

This thread is asked and answered.

Before it devolves into an undesirable back and forth, I am locking the thread.

BTW, here's GPU load vs. CPU load running Denoise.

Yellow - load Enhance

Green - start Denoise

Red - stop Denoise

What the CPU spike after Denoise has finished is, I don't know.

After Denoise might be creation of Linear DNG?

Yes, that makes sense.

I keep hearing how much faster Topaz is. Could somebody who has both, show comparison screenshots? Is it as good? I'd really like to know -

I did some testing now. The same picture in LR Classic Denoise AI and Topaz DeNoise AI (standard settings).

Used the same image from my Canon R5 - apprx. 49 megabytes.

In Topaz it took apprx. 47-48 seconds. GPU usage was 100%. Used 36% CPU.

In LR Classic I did not wait until it finished. It estimated 22 minutes to finish. It used 100% GPU there, but just a few % CPU.

Since Topaz and Adobe has similar image quality results, it seems that Adobe clearly has potential for tuning their algorithms. And this is also the reason I don't buy the "your GPU is too weak" argument that some people are posting here.

Could we please see some examples? Anyone?

Something like @Jao vdL 's very impressive raccoon example in this thread. That should put the matter to rest.

It's not just about fast. It's also about good.

Hey @Stein99. I'll need more info to help you figure this out. Could you please share the system info of Lightroom from Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > attach & share here?

The Intel i7 8700K comes with Intel® UHD Graphics 630 integrated graphics. We generally recommend a GPU with more than 2000 ops/sec. The UHD Graphics 630 scores stand at just 544. Check here to learn more: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/directCompute.html

While the VRAM component may meet the requirements, graphically demanding features may not be as smooth.

Check for any available driver updates for the GPU using Intel's driver assistant: https://www.intel.in/content/www/in/en/support/detect.html

Let us know how it goes. Thanks!

Yes, I know that my GPU is not the fastest - but 23 minutes when Topaz can do it in 30 seconds?

You recommend  > 2000 ops/sec and mine is 500 - but even if you do 23 min/4 it still will take 5,5 minutes (!).

Attaching sysinfo as txt. I checked system monitor when processing - and it uses 100% GPU and 3% CPU.

Here is prefs:

I am running quite fresh drivers - not old ones.
