dragging pics from a folder in OSX finder straight to a collection

I'm trying to drag pictures from a folder in finder straight into a collection folder in Lightroom, but nothing happens.

I am trying to add a selection my GF's photos with dates ranging from 2012. I would like to just put these in a collection while Lightroom just imports and catalogues in the background. is this not possible to do?

Having to import the pictures first and then sift through 7 years and about 10s of 1000s of photos just to find a few images would be a real pain.

I'm not sure what you mean. You can set a collection as target collection, but that will still not select this collection in the import dialog when you drag and drop images from the Finder. You have to manually select it.

We don’t disagree that you can add images to a collection on import. But like I said, and like you confirm, you have to manually check that box in the import dialog. All I said is that it is not automatically selected by the drag and drop action.

You can drag images from the Finder onto the Lightroom grid while you are in a collection, but that will not add these images to this collection. It will open the import dialog, showing the folder of these images as source. The collection is not yet checked in the right panel.

What? Lightroom doesn't require you to do that. When you import via any method, the imported photos go into the "Previous Import" section of the Catalog Panel, you shouldn't have any trouble at all finding the most current import and putting them in a collection from there.
