Question

Lightroom 2.0 will not export to Photoshop CS3

OK,

So I downloaded and installed lightroom 2.0 this morning and things are not working well.

System: Macpro 2.8, 8 gb ram, os x 10.5.4, nikon d300 raw files

The problem...

It started with Lightroom not exporting any images to photoshop. Doesn't matter if I try to send 1 or 20, I get a spinning beach ball, then nothing. if photoshop is closed it will open it, but nothing gets loaded into it. Plain export, merge to panoramic, edit as smart object, nothing does anything.

Tried in both 32 and 64 bit modes, tried re-installing Lightroom 2.0 from scratch. still nothing. I sent a sample raw file into adobe and am waiting to hear back, but figured I'd see what everyone else thinks as well.

Hi folks, I've been out on vacation for a few days, but just caught up on this thread. I think it may help if I summarized the problems and solutions we've seen so far:

    1. Photoshop sometimes does not update all its components to 10.0.1. This is Windows-only. As I mentioned in an earlier message, you can tell if you're having this problem by selecting "System Info" from the Help menu in Photoshop and checking what version the Scripting Support plugin is. If it says 10.0.0, but Photoshop is listed as 10.0.1, you're experiencing this issue. From what I can tell in this forum, this is usually fixed by downloading the 10.0.1 update, rebooting your machine, and re-applying the update. Check the Scripting Support plugin version again to verify that the update happened successfully.

    2. File paths with apostrophes and ampersands cause problems in Edit-in-Photoshop. This issue can be temporarily fixed by removing these characters from the file path, and will be fixed in an upcoming update. This bug is cross-platform.

    3. Ghost folder problems. There is no good workaround for this problem yet (other than using Synchronize on your folder), but it will be fixed in the next update. This bug is mostly Windows, but can happen on the Mac if you have relocated your User folder to another drive.

    4. Open as Smart Object - when the file is saved back out, it does not appear back in Lightroom. This is a design limitation at the moment, unfortunately. Smart Object files will need to be manually re-imported into Lightroom (though you can also use Synchronize to bring them in)

    5. I've seen a couple reports of files not coming back into Lightroom at all when saved out via Edit in Photoshop. If you're having this problem, and you aren't using any of the problematic characters in your file path (' or &), and you're not using Smart Objects, please post about it here in this thread.

I hope this helps. We're preparing an update with fixes for these and a handful of other problems and we're going to get it out as soon as we can - it's by far the highest priority on the team right now. We're a little short-staffed right now due to team members taking a little breather after the busy release period of 2.0 but we're very eager to get the update out.

    Thanks,

I have the same problem but it is only the "edit with lightroom adjustments" PhotoshopCS3Ext opens but no image then i get a message some time later that photoshop could not be launched. I reinstalled 10.01 patch. Photoshop then crashed on close> so i reinstalled the CS3 Suite, no unintstall. I got the usuall cannot install any of the application after the common components installed and photoshop closed OK

Yes and no. If I import files to my F drive (internal), I can open in CS3 no problem, but will not save back to LR in a stack and creates the ghost folder on the f (lower case) drive. If I import into my C drive, everything works perfectly--editing in CS3 and stacking back into LR.

You will be a happier camper when the problem is really solved. As it is, LR2 creates a PSD (or TIFF) file as so as you send it out to edit, whether you save it or not. Additionally, you cannot use any of the new features like combining images as layers, editing as a smart object, combing panos etc.

The workaround is OK, but the real thing will be great when it works.

My question is: Do all Windows users with LR2 and CS3 have this problem? Or is there some common configuration that causes this to happen?

You should probably go back and look at the notes in this thread. There are two separate problems, with two different symptoms. One is largely Mac related and looks like what you describe. The other is a largely Windows problem in which edited images don't automatically return to LR when saved, appear in a phantom folder, and are not stacked.

No need to go into all the workarounds and symptoms in this note. You can find them elsewhere in this thread.

If all you want to do is edit a photo and the edit-in-CS3 isn't working, the *worst* case workaround is just to export it and open it in CS3. The additional editor option is probably better if you can get that to work.

I am getting really annoyed with this problem. When I want to edit a photo I'm working on in LR2 in CS3, the CS3 program will open, but the photo I wanted to edit is not there. The only thing that I can do that works for me is to close both CS3 and LR2 and reboot. (Just closing the programs and reopening them doesn't work.)

I am using a Mac Pro, OS 10.5 (latest updates), and CS3 and LR2 with the latest updates. I am ready to scream . . . such a time-waster. Incidentally, I'm not working on the trial version of LR2, I purchased it and registered it.

    Any help would be appreciated.

This is a reply to message 214 from John Storjohann.

The two methods are different and do not use the same code. The new, default, 'Edit in Photoshop' uses a mechanism which sends instructions to Photoshop to open a particular file using Camera Raw.

When specifying Photoshop (or any other program) as an "additional" editor, the older LR1.x mechanism of rendering the image as a PSD or TIF before transferring it to Photoshop is used.

When Adobe gets the newer mechanism working correctly, it will be faster, but it will require the user to "Save" the modified file for it to end up stacked back in Lightroom.

Using the additional editor has not only made the transfer to Photoshop work for me, but it has eliminated the Ghost Director problem also.

My problem is solved! In LR2 I made CS3 the "additional external editor" (i.e., the 2nd external editor). I now use it, as the 2nd external editor, and everything works great, just like it did in LR1 - the edited photo is incorporated into the LR2 catalog stacked next to the original. Also, one other note that may be of interest to some. LR2 was running extremely slow on boot-up and, at the start of utilization each time it was booted, it would sometimes take long as 45 seconds to transition from the Library to the Develop module. I disabled my NVIDIA desktop manager for Lighroom 2. What a difference! LR2 fully boots in ~ 15 seconds and transitions from Library to Develop modules in ~ 5 seconds. I'm a happy camper!

Add another user with the "ghost Folder" problem. This is a new install of LR 2 not an upgrade. My folder names have "-" and "_" as characters.

Let me know if more info is needed .
