Question

Lightroom 2.0 will not export to Photoshop CS3

OK,

So I downloaded and installed lightroom 2.0 this morning and things are not working well.

System: Macpro 2.8, 8 gb ram, os x 10.5.4, nikon d300 raw files

The problem...

It started with Lightroom not exporting any images to photoshop. Doesn't matter if I try to send 1 or 20, I get a spinning beach ball, then nothing. if photoshop is closed it will open it, but nothing gets loaded into it. Plain export, merge to panoramic, edit as smart object, nothing does anything.

Tried in both 32 and 64 bit modes, tried re-installing Lightroom 2.0 from scratch. still nothing. I sent a sample raw file into adobe and am waiting to hear back, but figured I'd see what everyone else thinks as well.

Thanks for your help. Following your instructions I got the result I hoped for. I was surprised to see that when the file was imported into PSCS3 it came in with the .jpg extension, even though it was 16 bit and ProPhoto. I would have expected for the file to come into PS as a PSD since that is the file format I specified. But, it saved just fine and stacked back in LR 2.1.

I guess the reason for this is that now no file is created when sending to CS3. Before, I suppose, a PSD file was created first and sent to CS3. Now it is just a file image that only gets
    b saved
    as a PSD.

Anyway, all seems to be well now.

    Everything works fine, except...

I just noticed that TIFFs save from Photoshop are quite huge. It seems they are not compressed at all, despite I have set up LR to use TIFF ZIP compression in External Editing prefs.

If I manually Save As Tiff and specify the compression, the files are several times smaller.

    Wick,

Right click on your jpeg. Click "edit in" and and choose PS. In the dialogue that pops up choose "Edit a copy with LR adjustments" Below in the same box is where you choose the type of file to send to PS. Also tick the "Stack with original" check box.

This will make a copy of the original, in the flavor of your choice, open it in PS where you can do your thing. When you are done simply close the file. You will get a dialogue asking if you want to save the changes. Click on "Yes". This will save your edits to the file stacked alongside your original in LR.

    Hope this helps

I know that adding a layer of any kind rules out saving as a JPEG. But I have set the preferenes to edit in cs3 as a psd. So I don't know why it comes in to ps cs3 as a JPEG, and why saving results in a Save As and requires a manual import. And I'm still left with an extra copy of my jpeg. For me, LR 2.1 hasn't fixed the problem, except that the ghost folder issue is resolved.

When I'm in the Library or Develop mode, when I right click on the thumbnail "Edit in Photoshop" or press Ctrl E and then check "Edit a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments", the photo does not open in Photoshop, but instead the "Open As" dialog opens. At this point, I don't even know the name of the file, and have to go back to Lightroom to find it. I expect it to open in Photoshop, am I missing something?

Just click "Edit in Photoshop CS3" (Ctrl+E).

The photoshop integration is actually much better in LR2. It would open the file in PS without creating a TIFF derivative. Only when you save in Photoshop, the TIFF will be created and automatically imported to Lightroom.

I just downloaded 2.1 and can not figure out how to "edit in Photoshop with adjustments made in lightroom". Seems to me in previous versions it was seemless. Thanks, Freddi

    Wick Smith,

Since a .jpg cannot contain layers you must flatten the image before you ctrl-s. Then the .jpg will be back in LR with your PS changes applied. If you want a layered file in LR you must send to PS as a .tiff or .psd, not a .jpg.

ian: If you were responding to me, then yes: I am using the new 2.1 version. Jpg to jpg works as it should, including stacking. Jpg out and psd back doesn't. And a superfluous jpg appears in the library.

Have you installed the Lr2.1 release candidate? If not, you should try it because it's supposed to have fixed the problem. Download along with release notes can be found at: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Lightroom_2.1
