Lightroom 2.0 will not export to Photoshop CS3

OK,

So I downloaded and installed lightroom 2.0 this morning and things are not working well.

System: Macpro 2.8, 8 gb ram, os x 10.5.4, nikon d300 raw files

The problem...

It started with Lightroom not exporting any images to photoshop. Doesn't matter if I try to send 1 or 20, I get a spinning beach ball, then nothing. if photoshop is closed it will open it, but nothing gets loaded into it. Plain export, merge to panoramic, edit as smart object, nothing does anything.

Tried in both 32 and 64 bit modes, tried re-installing Lightroom 2.0 from scratch. still nothing. I sent a sample raw file into adobe and am waiting to hear back, but figured I'd see what everyone else thinks as well.

I had exactly the same problem with the edits appearing in a new folder with the same name (and on the same volume) as the original picture when I was working with Lightroom 2.

However now, as I commented on the Page "Editing in Photoshop", I'm working with Lightroom 2.1 Photoshop is opened but the picture doesn't appear there and in Lightroom I get the message that the picture could not be edited because Photoshop could not be launched.

    Help!!!

I have Lightroom 1.4 & Adobe CS3 .... in the past week I have not been able to open images from Lightroom to CS3.....it gives me option of Photoshop.exe, but when I click on that absolutely nothing happens.
I have been happy with both Adobe products for a year but just this past week I want to throw out the Lightroom. Why won't the images open all of a sudden......?????

    thanks

Well, I have to agree with Jock.

Adobe: Where has your SQA gone?

Oh, I better spell that out since the LR team may not know about it. It's Software Quality Assurance.

As much as I would like to rush out and purchase CS4, I'm not going to buy it, and I'm not going to recommend my peers go out and buy it. If Adobe can't get it right by having LR 2 or 2.1 open a file in Photoshop CS3... Oh, wait! That's an Adobe product too. Ah, all the more reason they should be able to figure it out.

I'm really ticked off at Adobe at this point. I right click on a photo, and select "Edit in Photoshop CS3... " and Photoshop CS3 comes up and it just sits there and does NOTHING. Then, several seconds later I get a message, "The file could not be edited because Adobe Photoshop CS3 could not be launched."

    What?

Photoshop CS3 WAS launched. (At this point I'm reminding me that I'm not opening the image in ACDSee 10 which would mean the folks at ACD Systems screwed up, but I'm trying to edit in an Adobe product.) Yet, Photoshop didn't open my file.

Am I supposed to get excited about CS4 integration with Photoshop and Flash and Illustrator and... oh, heck.. .it doesn't matter because I'm going to wait until others have spent all their hard-earned money and tested it and debugged it for the Adobe SQA team, and Adobe has come up with a CS4 service pack to fix the bugs that will most likely exist.

I'll quit my griping. But, in all seriousness. If Adobe is going to charge $299 for LR, then they better make sure it is bug free before selling it. People are not going to continue to pay high prices, and will go back to what they were using before LR.

Likewise, if CS4 hits the streets and has as many bugs as LR 2.1, we will be hearing about bailouts for Adobe too.

So, Adobe, get it together. Money's tight these days, and if we, your customers, are going to spend money on your products, you better fix what you have sold to us.

I dont think it is much to ask that the software be properly tested before the release of Lightroom 2. If there were an alternative I'm sure many other jobbing photographers would be looking to change after this fiasco. I even considered wasting time to re-install Ver 1.4 and import all the libraries again but I feel that Adobe should fix this. After all they were quick enough to take the money.
If anybody at Adobe read this then the newest fix don't work on XP pro.

To get the additional options dialog you need to first set up CS3 as an additional external editor.

It is not supposed to work like this... to say exactly what should happen...

Right click on an image in the "film strip" at the bottom, then "Edit In" then "Edit in Photoshop CS3". It opens the image
    b directly
(without the in-between dialog box (which always came up in version 1) that gave you options including "Edit a copy").

    > I don't ZIP my tiffs because Qimage has had problems reading them.

LZW should be compatible with everything, but it doesn't work either.

    > You choose the compression in the dialogue box that pops up when you select "Edit in PS". In the file copy options you can choose "No compression" or "ZIP".

That't if you define PS as an external editor via a preset. If you use the normal "Edit in Photoshop CS3" behaviour, the file just open in CS3 without dialogs and with adjustments applied. More important, the derivative TIFF is not even created yet. Not until you save it in Photoshop. That's a great improvement from LR1.

    > In previous versions of Lightroom I could right click on a photo on the bottom, and check Edit in Photoshop, and then check edit a copy, it would automatically open up in CS3.

Linda, in LR2 it works in a different, better way. See above.

    > Now, it opens the dialog box to chose a file in Photoshop. Is this the way it is supposed to be?

No. Something might is wrong with your installation of Photoshop. try this http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b61fd6 .

I appreciate everybody's responses to my original question -- but, I still don't have the answer. In previous versions of Lightroom I could right click on a photo on the bottom, and check Edit in Photoshop, and then check edit a copy, it would automatically open up in CS3. Now, it opens the dialog box to chose a file in Photoshop. Is this the way it is supposed to be? In my mind, this is not useful.

    Dorin,

I don't ZIP my tiffs because Qimage has had problems reading them.

You choose the compression in the dialogue box that pops up when you select "Edit in PS". In the file copy options you can choose "No compression" or "ZIP".
