Lightroom 6 (CC) keeps crashing

I have just updated to Lightroom 6 through creative cloud. Lightroom 5 used to work perfectly, if a little slowly, but 6 just keeps crashing when I try to browse or edit images. This morning it has crashed 30 times and I have only managed to edit 5 images from a recent wedding. I've disabled all plugins, but that didn't help, and have tried to boot in safe mode, again with no success. I am running a MacBook Pro, 2.53 GHz Core2 duo, 8GB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, Yosemite, 500GB SSD. I have tried to go back to LR5 but the updated catalogue won't work with it. Any ideas anyone?

Correct answer Jim Wilde

Your original LR5 catalog is still there, so you could go back to that, and you'd only lose the work that you did on the 5 images.

But with LR6, try turning off the GPU option on the Lightroom>Preferences>Performance tab. Does that make a difference?

I ended up having to go back to Adobe Lightroom website and do a live chat. Did this yesterday morning. That person was no help at all so closed chat. Tried to figure it out but just couldnt. Contacted live chat again and this time I was able to get someone who knew what they were doing!!! As I got to the licensing section my keyboard locked up and I had to shut down ! Reconnected and got another person who knew what he was doing. Got my perpetual lightroom back, no cc and he got all my folders added and the catalog data!!! Talk about a very happy person. My advise is to keep trying with tech. The perpetual will not get any more updates but they will help. It is all about getting the right tech, so if you dont the first, second or even third, you will get someone eventually who can help. Good luck

Has this issue been fixed I have the standalone lightroom tried updating and its telling I have to buy a new version and everyone is saying the new version is crashing - I need to edit some fricking photos here?! Everytime I open the app it asks me to choose a catalogue then crashes. I'm on the very latest version of High Sierra on Late 2013 Macbook Pro 13 inch Retina - lightroom is version 6.6.1. I'm not interest in paying more for a new version or going on a subscription for £9.99. Was working before I upgraded to High Sierra - is there a patch for my version available?

is there a patch for my version available?

Yes, you can update to v6.14.  Do NOT un-install 6.6 (it is needed to add the patch)

Download Photoshop Lightroom

Click on the > 'carrot' to expand your v6 options:

Regards. My System: Windows-11, Lightroom-Classic 15.0, Photoshop 27.0, ACR 18.0, Lightroom 9.0, Lr-iOS 10.4.0, Bridge 16.0 .

This is frickin ridiculous. Everything was fine. We pay an ongoing fee, they change it and EVERYONE is having problems. For me, as well as crashing, it is going back to the wrong catalogue. and then it crashes anyway. HELLO, ADOBE, anyone out there??????? what is happening.

I am having the same problem! It is crashing everytime that I want to open it or in the middle of opening files while already loaded.  Did not have this problem before.  I bought my computer in mid 2015.  It is a MacBook Pro, 2.5 GHz Intel Core i7, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3, and  AMD Radeon R9 M370X 2 GB Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB graphics.   The lightroom CC 6 that I have WAS WORKING FINE. I bought it on 2015 and I had no problems using lightroom till recently.  WHAT HAPPENED? WHAT IS THE FIX?

in order to go to light room preferences light room has to be running.  do you not think this might be a problem if it crashes before it can start?????

Lightroom is not responding when I try to open it and nothing is working to fix the problem.  I have tried signing out of CC and back in several times.  CC says there is an update for Lightroom but will NOT update the program as it says to close it down first.  It is closed as I had to force quit.  Catch 22 here.  I was able to download a photo shoot to the program on Monday morning but now it will not open at all!  What next?

I have had enough of Adobe.  Creative cloud is the worst idea ever.  I don't know enough about computer programming so need Lightroom fixing remotely by an Adobe engineer . The free trial version works fine and people I know who use bootleg versions don't have a problem. Just idiot me who pays for it . Wondering how many customers they have lost. From now on I'm doing pirate or find an alternative to Adobe

I agree. It is unbelievable that this problem remains unresolved for over two years. Apparently the Lightroom 6 Library Module is such a patchwork that there is no easy fix. Crashing regularly is one thing, however, recently also loosing the edit history leaving only the data on the hard drive i.e. the unedited raw file and the exported and saved .jpg file(s) is even worse. It defeats the whole idea of a non-destructive edit trail.

The fact that Adobe is apologizing shows that they have lost control.

I found the issue in my case (problem:crashing when exporting many photos at once) - it's a cpu overheating issue! opening the chassis and putting a desktop fan on the side fixed it!

I have used LR5 for a long while - no issues.

LR CC now crashes my mac - no other programme has ever done this! No GPU acceleration is on, catalogue is optimised.

It really is absolutely not acceptable. And there doesn't seem to be any input from Adobe or just a fix full stop!

Thankfully I have also used Capture One for the last four years - it is solid as rock. Never crashed. Guess which way I am going !

I have the top specced 27" iMac 5K from 2015 and the Lightroom CC keeps crashing every time I use it. I always update to the newest versions supplied by Adobe. I am very frustrated of this situation.

I am really suffering problem with Lightroom cc update 2015 6.1 & Camera Raw 9.6.1 which came June or July update from adobe. I use my GPU just for editing photos which is Nvidia Gtx 950, well my system is working great without any problem with the GPU but only the lightroom & camera raw freezing images ( NEF or TIFF) whenever I am going to develop. I tried all the stuffs like uninstalling both PS & Lightroom , reinstalling, reinstalling graphics driver etc. In the PS , there is no problem but only problem happening in Camera Raw & Lightroom. If I uncheck the option "use graphics processor" on both application everything working fine but a bit slow. My question is why this is happening? I had Gtx 630 previously which was lower end GPU everything was working good. So why the hell I upgraded my gpu ? for better rendering obviously. I figured out My GPU is working fine enough (tested) but there is a bug in these package of software. My notebook also runs on gtx 950m & there is no glitch or bug, the same software package installed like desktop. I dont want to downgrade my Camera raw, because I saw system information on Camera raw & Lightroom. Both of them says everything is passed like open gl 4.4 etc. Then where is the glitch? Why this is happening only on desktop gpu not the notebook? I also read the adobe forum & there are thousands of people facing the same problem with GPU option. Can adobe provide a strong package like no glitch or bug?
