Lightroom: Crashing with GPU acceleration on (AMD Radeon driver 17.4.4)

I am getting more and more frustrated with Lightroom. The app seems to be slower and slower, freezing often and the latest updates of Lightroom and my Radeon drivers make it now crash whenever I go to the develop module. Turning off GPU acceleration solves the crashing, but makes Lightroom even slower and that is really terrible. Are there any plans to improve this? I am seriously looking for alternatives now.

See: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/rollback-driver-amd-issue.html

We're working with AMD to try and correct this problem. We have also identified the following procedure as a potential workaround:

Launch the "AMD Settings” utility software included as part of the AMD Radeon Software Crimson ReLive Edition 17.4.4. Click on the Gaming tab, then clicking on the Global Settings tab, then click on "Wait for Vertical Refresh" and set it to "Always on". Quit the "AMD Settings” utility. Then relaunch Lightroom and Lightroom would seem to work fine without crashing the AMD GPU driver (*).

* If you later toggle the "Wait for Vertical Refresh" settings back and set it to factory default value "Always off", Lightroom will continue to work without crashing. So it seems the actual value of "Wait for Vertical Refresh” does not matter, but the act of toggling the "Wait for Vertical Refresh” in the first place seems to change some hidden driver factory default settings that would make the Lightroom crash disappear.

I am having similar issues with the past/ present drivers. I have an R9 290X graphics card updated to the latest release, 17.6.1 I am mostly posting to note that my graphics card is ALSO having problems.

After a few days of going through forum after forum, I tried this recommended fix to disable GPU Acceleration to no avail as any time I did this Lightroom crashed before initiating the change. I tried 5 times and gave up and researched different solutions.

From here I decided to make sure everything that could cause a domino effect was updated, I found I had an outdated Intel chipset and updated that to its current, I had issues there Intels driver update utility kept recommending an update from last year that doesn't even exist. I clean booted and all that jazz before I just upgraded it to it's current chipset driver.

Then I uninstalled Lightroom and updated to the latest Radeon after rolling back to the previous. I did the restart and reinstalled Lightroom. I just now was able to deselect GPU Acceleration and it accept the change without crashing!

The moral of the story is also UPDATE YOUR CHIPSET DRIVER not just your graphic card driver and see if it resolves the issue.

I haven't worked in LR that much since then but I've been able to switch libraries and enter the develop section without an issue so far. I will note I was having more of an issue with RAW images than JPEG before this.

Also here's my setting for anyone whose interested:  (Current)

Believe me: 4k screens are currently no fun with LR

I use the AMD RX480 form more than half a year with LR CC without any issue till in need to work on a new set of RAW images. LR contious crashes whele cropping, or deleting a file from disk. The Tip from support to desactivate the GPU in performing sessions works fine. But I want to upgrade to a 4K screen af the summer.
I hope a sollution comes out soon

I saw a similar fix last fall somewhere, but couldn't find it again.

I sort of remember it was in gaming options, so I tried a few options and luckily found one that worked.  Glad it worked for you too.  Spread the word around...

Great idea! Works!

That solves the problem for me too! I did one test photo ... works fine

I've not yet received my new Dell XPS 8920 SE box... should arrive in 2 weeks . Meanwhile I researched to buy Lightroom 6 and uncovered 'way too many unhappy campers using my graphic card. So many related difficulties when using certain additional AMD RX 4XX & 5XX series cards. My soon-to-arrive card is the AMD Radeon RX 480 with 8GB GDDR5... arg, sitting near top of the bad boy list.Users report that Lightroom &/or Photoshop go strange or outright grind to a halt for certain AMD users. The failure may additionally be Win10 specific.I don't know very much yet, am just doing my due diligence. I've opened a case with AMD on this subject. Told them I'll be cc'ing Adobe & my Dell salesperson. Any topical feedback here?I have the fully detailed Word docx if this attachment’d help?Standing by....Stanbtw this is my 1st time in a forum. If I'm supposed to withdraw and wait for reply(s) my email is nowak_stan@yahoo.comI'm harmless enough, just don't know what I'm doing..'til later, I hope

I had a similar LR 6.10 crash with an AMD R9 200 graphics card using the latest Radeon Software (17.6.1).

I think I've solved my problem by changing one of the options: click on Gaming (lower left), then Global Settings (upper left), then click on "Wait for Vertical Refresh" and select "Always on".

LR now works with GPU acceleration enabled.  Give it a try.

(Windows Driver Store Version 22.19.162.4 = AMD Driver Version 17.4.4.)

Two workarounds:  Disable the GPU, or roll back the AMD driver to the previous version 17.4.3.  If you're not on a large 4K or 5K display, turning off the GPU is much easier, since GPU acceleration typically shows no significant performance improvement on smaller displays.

See this help article for details: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/rollback-driver-amd-issue.html
