(macOS 12.6) Lightroom Classic v11.5 freezes on import

Since the past 2 or three updates (sorry, I cannot remember exactly) I do have this same issue:

During import+move from Canon 5D Mark IV, iPhone 12Pro or even adding directly from harddrive Lightroom freezes and never recovers by itself even after hours and I have to "force quit".

I tried to enable/disable the GPU support.

I also dida reset on the preferences.

Lightroom has full read/write access to my harddrive.

I tried a downgrade to LRC 11.1, but no success.

When I did not start the import process, LRC works just fine.

I am very thankfull forany suggestions/help.

Thank you to all helpers that had spent their time for my problem.

Finally I got the problem solved by following a hint by "Axel in Sweden":

>>>Hi Torben,

I'm not at my Mac atm, but will check in LR how the operations are named so you can easily follow.

What I can say at this point is that the problem reoccured after a while, and I could relate it to an instance of pCloud that I have running on my system to make my cloud files available. PCloud uses fuse to make the cloud files available as a local mount. I have not figured out how exactly pcloud interferes with the import operations, but it does somehow, because when I do the following:

  1. Quit LR
  2. Pause the synchronization in the pCloud app (no need to quit pcloud)
  3. Start LR with "check catalog"
  4. Import the file

it works always. So just in case you are using pCloud or any other solution that is based on fuse (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_in_Userspace) it might be worth a try to deactivate that.

Best,

Axel<<<

Approximately how many photos are you trying to import? Does the rest of the computer still work properly when this freeze happens, or is the entire computer frozen?

Everything more than one single picture is going to fail.

I tried everything from 2, 3 until >100 pictures.

The rest of the computer just works fine.

Hello... when you import from a hard drive as you mention, are you Adding or Moving??
I'm curious to see the Right Panel of the Import window to check if the Destination Folder is selected

I was adding from hard drive or importing/moving from iPhone/5dMarkIV

Both methods show the same problem with LRC freezing

Try resetting your Lightroom preferences:

Also see: https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-discussions/important-steps-for-manually-resetting-preferences-omitted-from-help-article/td-p/12972518

Quit Lightroom Classic.
MacOS: Press and hold the Shift + Option keys.
Windows: Press and hold the Shift + Alt keys.
While holding down the keys, launch Lightroom Classic.
When asked, select "Yes".

Hello Rachel,

all of your 7 steps were without success (see my initial post).

You have any other hints?

Thank you,

Torben

Hi there, thanks for reaching out with the details. I'd love to help you figure this out.

What is the destination of the import? Is it the internal drive or an external drive? What import settings do you use? Please share a screenshot of the import window.

To iron out any underlying permission issues, try these steps & let me know if the issue persists.

Let me know if this helps,

Thanks!

Hello Sameer,

Thanks for the replies...

The access rights are ok.

The disk is working properly.

The LRC preferences have been reset.

Nothing worked for me...

The import does not work with applying a preset or without...

Ok, you are using the Add option during import. Great, fine, a good way to go.

Now one odd possible bug that some trip over, others never. Even though you selected Add, and as such the Destination is not shown, and should not be an issue, it might. Some find that if you change the method to Copy, or Copy ad DNG, and as such you will be presented with a destination panel, that if somehow the current default destination is wrong, it hoses the import up, including via Add. This apparently happens when a previous valid destination is moved, renamed, deleted, etc, in or out of LrC. Thing is, in the import destination panel, what was last used is what is shown and in use. Odd that this could affect Add, but.

So an experiment, change from Add to Copy, try one photo, fail? Change the destination, try one photo, success? Change to Add, continue.
