P: Crashes every time I click on a video

Since I updated LrC to version 14.0.1, I can't play videos in library mode any more. Lightroom crashes every time I click on a video.

(MacBook Pro, Intel), MAC OS 15.0.1, short video from iPhone 12 mini.

I have sent an error report to Adobe each time and had my system checked each time (no incompatibilities were found).

I switched to the premium version on my android phone today. (Using pixel 10 pro XL). I've always used Lightroom CC for photo editing and wanted to start basics of video editing. As soon as I open any video, short or long, they crash and I'm taken back into the gallery. I hope someone has found a resolution to suggest because the whole point for me to upgrade was to learn video edits and of course, explore premium features for photo edits.

There is a quick crash message and then it disappears.

Bit of an update on this... I bought a new M4 Mac a few months back and discovered it doesn't happen on that. It's still happening on my old Intel Mac, even on the latest version 14.4, but since I'm not actively using that anymore it's no longer an issue for me.

I started having exactly the same problem today:  opening videos shot on iphone 13 pro caused immediate crashing.  Turning ON the HDR in Library setting in settings>performance seems to have helped.  No idea why, nor any idea whether having that on is a good idea generally.  I don't shoot in HDR.

I tried enabling HDR in Performance Settings. Now it doesn't crash (at least, on the sample video I uploaded earlier), but I get a message saying "There was an error working with the video" (see screenshot below).

Even if this setting fixed the issue, as a software engineer I find these sort of workarounds distatesful at best, as they only mask the underlying problem (and may have side-effects of their own). Downgrading to LR13 is an even worse suggestion. I'll say again: Someone at Adobe needs to reproduce and debug; we're just going in circles here.

Can someone from the Adobe team provide a progress update on the patch/fix regarding this issue?  Based upon this thread and other similar ones, the problem clearly seems to be systemic.

This from tom_griggs: Enabling HDR (Lightroom -> performance -> then check "Enable HDR in library" box) worked for me in LR 14.1.1. Videos now playing in both orientations. No crashes...so far.   It worked for me!

Was still an issue for me on an Intel Mac with 14.5.1. Enabling HDR ended the crashes.

This worked for me. MacBook Pro 14.1.1 LRC Intel processor. Mac OS Sequoia 15.1.1

So where are we with all of this? I provided an example file (which, incidentally, is also vertical). It would be really nice if someone on the Lightroom team can take a minute to import it and reproduce the error. Otherwise, this thread is going nowhere fast.

I made my first report months ago and they told me they couldn’t reproduce the error and that it must be a problem on my end. Despite Lightroom 13 working 100% fine with all videos and the only problem being the upgrade to 14.

Don’t hold your breath on a fix. Downgrade to LR13 and/or consider other software solutions.

I tried the HDR workaround and it didn't work for me. On my latest video's the orientation does seem to play a role, but the live video's from pictures still work like normal

This fixed it for me! I was having the same exact problem with Portrait mode videos, crashed every time until I enabled HDR in performance/preferences. LR Classic ver 14.1.1 on Mac.

Ik have the same issue, but it doesn't seem to happen with all files and not dependent on orientation. All the movies from Live Photos seem to work so far.

At first I noticed it with one particular movie so I removed it and imported it again, but the issue is still there
