P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

About one month ago, this feature was working excellently. Now it is worthless and does not function at all. It is unable to remove almost anything from the picture. Had to go back to the old methods. Very disappointing when was very excited previously when everything was working well. What have you guys done to ruin it?.

Remove continues to work well for nearly everyone (otherwise, there would have been hundreds of complaints posted here). I suggest you start a new thread in this forum, describing in detail what you're seeing. Full-resolution screenshots (not phone pics) are always helpful. Do the LR menu command Help > System Info and copy/paste the entire contents into your post so we can see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running and important LR options that are set.

Generative remove constantly requires update, even when it is complete

These symptoms can occur when LR can't write the .lrcat-data file for some reason, either because LR has corrupted it or there is a permissions issue. LR stores computed masks in that file. Try these steps:

1. Do the menu command Help > System Info. If you're not on the latest version (currently 14.3), do Help > Updates.

2. In LR, do Edit > Catalog Settings > General > Show. That will open Windows File Explorer on the current catalog folder.

3. Exit LR.

4. Move the file <catalog>.lrcat-data to the Desktop.

5. Start LR.

7. In Library Grid view (not Loupe view), select all photos and do Photo > Develop Settings > Update AI Settings. That will recompute all the AI masks, which could take a while.

nctionne pas avec des cables électriques dans un ciel uniforme. Rien ne se passe avec aucune variante.

@Bernard22916504bp0y: "does not work with power cables in a uniform sky."

1. Uncheck Detect Objects before brushing a selection -- it doesn't work well, especially with skinny objects and along the edges of photos.

2. After clicking Remove, check that the Opacity slider is 100 -- LR infrequently changes it to something else.

3. If you applied Remove on top of an AI mask (e.g. Sky or Subject mask), do the menu command Settings > Update AI Settings to recompute the mask.

4. See this short article for how to remove objects more reliably:
https://www.lightroomqueen.com/generative-remove-replace/

Most complaints about Remove are addressed in the article. But if it doesn't help, please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot). With nearly every one of the many dozen problem photos posted here, we've been able to show how to quickly remove the desired objects.  Power cables are no exception -- once you learn the tool, they nearly always remove easily.

To help, we'll need a lot more details about what you're doing and what you see (or don't see).  Full-resolution screenshots (not phone pics) can be very helpful.

Do any of you know what is going on with LR? Every time I apply a mask and/or use the clone tool, it needs to be updated when I go back to the photo.

So bizarre. I just went through a ton of photos from our wedding this past weekend and now when I export, all the masks/clone I applied are not on the exported image.

When I go back to see why, LR is saying I need to update each image. And this happens over and over… I’ve updated each clone and mask 5 times. I go back and they need to be updated again.

Any ideas?

@bobd-seekeroflight the issue you descrive match a bug that appeared in LrC 14.1 and was fixe after Adobe Max 2024.

Can you share a video recording of what you see?

So do:

Update Ai,

Change Image

Back to previous imge

Do us all a favor. When removing an item, it's typically in the center of our frame. The progress bar appears RIGHT OVER the object we're trying to remove.  I know it's movable, but can we keep it off the image?  It's only purpose at this point is to be in the way!  Also, it would speed things up considerably if you could make the "remove" button appear next to the last item selected for removal.

When I'm using generative remove on area with some solid background or some of gradient, there is visible hard edge after remove which looks bad - maybe some option of feathering selection or let's add 10-15% of feather to make it look better?

I would really like them to add a batch remove feature. For example I shot an event where multiple people walk up to a podium, take something, and leave. I cannot have a tripod, there's and EXIT sign in ugly bright green above every person. Because I'm handheld, I can't simply remove one, and then sync to apply to all, because the position of the sign moves slightly. Ai should be able to recognize the shape of basic objects like a giant EXIT sign, and "move"/reposition where the removal is happening within the image. It should recognize the object and adjust positioning for batch removal processing. Thanks!

Hello Rick, it´s been a while since an error appears when I use the generatuve remove, at first it works perfectly but when I ccontinue working and come back to the photo it says I have to update. I Update it, but the same error appears. I already updated lr to the latest version and give permission to access the disk. I dont know what else to do.

Im working with a Macbook pro.

Hope there´s a solution since  this is my work tool.

Thanks, Ana

Please attach a full-resolution JPEG exported from the unmodified original photo (not a screenshot) showing where Remove doesn't do a good job on the text -- that will show more clearly what the issue is.
