P: Generative Remove Feedback (Lr Classic & Lr Eco)

This post applies to Lightroom Classic and the Lightroom Ecosystem products.
Camera Raw feedback can be found here.

Generative Remove makes it easier to remove unwanted objects and distractions with a simple gesture, even on complex backgrounds. For more accurate results, be sure to include the object's shadow in your selection and/or expand its size.

Detect Objects uses AI to find the objects underneath a brushed area. The masked areas will now appear larger than the Early Access version of this feature. You can also circle objects for quicker selection now.

We have also updated the spot selection experience to make it easier to manage variations, switch the fill type, refine the selection area, or re-generate as needed.

Batch updating is also now supported for Generative Remove spots.

Try out the latest updates and share your feedback with us here. Please also include the following details in your post:
  • App version
  • System details
  • Example image(s) if you wish to share

Our team continually monitors this thread to track issues for future improvement. Thanks!

LRC ver 14.5.1 Windows 11

At present the AI Remove tool is unusable for half of what I usually use it for. I use LR daily, and so do other editors I work with and we have all been dipleased with the latest updates to the AI Remove tool. It causes a number of issues between us and now takes us longer to edit. I frequently use it to remove stray hairs and frizzy hair. Lately when I make a selection, the tool reaches beyond my selection and replaces the friz I am trying to remove with different, chuncky looking friz, often full of weird looking pixelated discolored artifacts. There are other issues too with the regular remove tool just leaving burry blobs where it removes things, but I digress. What was once a quick task for me now takes way too long. Please roll back whateve you have done untill you can acctually improve it.

I can only agree with many of the comments here—unlike earlier versions, generative removal has become practically useless for my needs.

The main problem is that not only the marked areas are altered, but also large surrounding areas—often to the point of being “destroyed.” Everything just gets messed up. I’m attaching an example.

Sorry, Adobe, but this is simply unacceptable!

Try updating your graphics driver by going directly to the manufacturer's web site, rather than relying on Windows Update or a manufacturer's update utility:
https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom-classic/kb/troubleshoot-gpu.html#solution-4

If that doesn't help, please copy/paste here the entire contents of the LR menu command Help > System Info -- that will let us see exactly which versions of hardware and software LR thinks you're running.

This tool is great if the removal is simple my issue is more complex to remove a person withe a lot of different textures surrounding. After removal it left the area's texture unmatched and pixelated. It would have saved time and headached doing it the old way in Photoshop instead of lightroom. Please work on this it would make sense to do some removal in a photo program. Anyone else have this issue?

The generative remove tool edits beyond my selected area and wont stay limited to what I want to change. It assumes too much with it's reache and doesn't get it right no matter how many times I click Generate. This seems to be the case after recent updates, was better before. *Side note, I wish generative remove was it's own button and not a check box below ther regulare remove button.

Hello! I have been using the Generative AI tool for quite some time now. Unfortunately it has been a geat dissapointment, as it doesn't remove the selected area. Either I select all the area I want to be removed, either when I select a part of the area, it just doesn't do anything. Even when I check all 3 available options, the area is not being replaced!

Another result is to remove just a tiny bit from the selected area. This results to multiple actions of trying to remove the area. So basically, this tool needs to be fixed/improved!

Tengo estos problemas con Eliminacion generativa, quiero eliminar un ventilador y todas las opciones que me da son manchas, blancas o negras, pero nunca genera el relleno.

@Maximiliano_Favilla1975: "I want to eliminate a fan, and all it gives me are spots, white or black, but it never generates the fill."

With your screenshot, Generative AI Remove did a pretty good job when I selected the shadows below the fan as well:

Please attach here a full-resolution JPEG exported from the original, unedited photo, to verify that the same selection works well on the full photo.

Generative AI remove isn't working well for me now like it used to. I used to be able to brush my mask right up against a wanted object to remove unwanted objects behind a subject and it would only effect the pixals that I brushed in, without effecting any pixals on my subject outside of the brushed mask. Now, AI remove is changing pixals OUTSIDE of my brushed masked areas. If I'm removing a pole coming out from behind a person's head for example, at the top of the head where the pole is coming out, AI will now do weird things to the subject's head. I can no longer butt masks right up against a wanted subject anymore without it doing weird things to the edges. Here's an example: See how it weirdly "rounded out" the guy's shoulder? The mask I drew was squared off around the shoulder but it effected pixals outside of where I drew the mask. This new update is very annoying and should be changed. I don't want pixals outside of the mask being effected.

There is a separate bug report about this change in LR 14.5, which Adobe is investigating:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/lightroom-classic-bugs/p-gen-remove-now-changes-elements-outside-the-...

Please add your screenshots to that thread, including a new screenshot showing what was selected.  This is happening to a fair number of people but far from everyone, and the more examples posted, the more likely Adobe will prioritize the issue.

Getting lots of pixels outside my mask being edited. Shall we call it “Coloring outside the lines”, “Brush bleed”, "Pixel creep” or “Rogue retouching"? Also, the generated results are now nowhere as good as they used to be. I would even say terrible. ** Unusable ** - see attached screenshots. Can I revert to the prior version of Lightroom? I have thousands of pictures to edit and this has me dead in the water. Photoshop Beta has the same mask mischief when doing a crop rotate with generative expand. It goes way into my picture, way beyond the edge changing things that don't need chaning. I end up having to delete important areas to remove what crop gave me and do a manual remove. Don't you do regression testing? How did such a serious issue get released?

I am finding it very difficult to remove a persons legs from behind some actors in kilts and bag pipes. the child is between the two actors.  Find a person distraction doesn't work. Using the remove tool keeps trying to put legs back in the image. I have edited it to remove the shadows. I could remove the lady on the left, but the kid is hidden behind the actors. removing his feet and body from behind is difficult.

You must include in the selection a small margin around the area you want to replace, at least a few pixels wide that overlaps with the surrounding grass and kilts:

If there's any bit left unselected, Remove will try very hard to match the unselected bits. Zoom way in to make it easier to select precisely.

I went through about 6 variations to find a couple that looked good, e.g.

You've likely applied Remove on top an AI mask, e.g. a Sky Mask, so the mask needs to be recomputed. The AI Edit Status button in the Develop tool bar will be yellow, and if you click on it, you'll see:

Click Update.
