Question

Preview unavailable and reading errors

I shot pics on iPhone and exported them as JPGs to harddrive. Recently LR classic (v.13.1)  failed to preview about 50% of my photos for import.

When going ahead with import most of them show up but about 10%  are blank with an eclamation mark icon and "readingg error".

I removed "Lightroom Catalog-v13 Previews.lrdata" from User/pictures/Lightroom that did not help. Removed chaches from the system.

Now when opening LR the app still appears to have  a hard time getting previews and even more pics are blank and getting a reading error icon.

I am on Mac mini M2 Pro with 32 GB Ram MacOS Sonoma 14.2.1

have the same issue with Lightroom classic 13.1 . The photos were shot with iPhone and exportet as Jpg to a dedicated folder on my harddrive.

Lightroom classic fails to preview about 50% of my photos. I am on Mac mini M2 Pro with 32 GB Ram MacOS Sonoma.

When importing from harddrive most photos import succesfully but 10% are blank with an "!” icon with an "reading error".  All photos were made the same way.

Work around is to duplicate, resafe and import  those photos but it is an awkward workflow.

Thank You. I choose LR classic to build up an archive for my mothers artwork and want to benefit from the tagging options. So my workflow is to shoot on iPhone and download from iCloud to my harddrive, from there I import to Lightroom. I just explain this as there are no cards involved and my brand new hard drive is not likely to have a failure. All pics and previous pics were fine and shot the same way.  Only that I shoot in HEIF-format on iPhone and export the pics as JPGs to my harddrive.

My experience was that LR classic had problem building previews and leaving some pictures out. What is worse is that after I removed  "Lightroom Catalog-v13 Previews.lrdata" from User/pictures/Lightroom and forced LR to rebuild previews even more pictures in other folders wich had no issue before got blank with an exclamation point with black circle.

A workaround is to duplicate affected images, open in PS and save them with an alternated name. Then import them to LR again. From my test those pictures have no issue but loose all tags.

If there is no bug in LR I tend to batch import as many images in PS as I can before importing them. But will have a look the links you provided as well.
