Tether control window doesn't show when tethered to Canon 5D mark iv with m1 macbook pro

I have newest version of LR Classic 11.1 AND MBP with OS 12.1 tethered to Canon 5D Mark IV with latest firmware. Running in Rosetta Emulation Mode with an external monitor. Tether control panel doesn't come up. I can manually trigger capture from the camera or from File>Tethered Capture>Trigger Capture but the control window is nowhere to be seen. Yes, tried to hide and show. Tried CMD+T. Tried disconnect and reconnect. Tried stop and start. Tried Full Screen and not. Last week it worked intermittently and sometimes would  on secondary display. Today not at all. Also lost connection today after multiple attempts to start and stop. Had to make the clients wait and pull the card and import manually. Please fix this and better yet, fix tether where it doesn't have to be switched to Rosetta. I feel like Adobe was finally taking tethered shooting seriously and consistent dependability has been so improved recently. Until I bought my new M1 MBP that is. Now it's back to a crapshoot on whether or not it works and whether it will be an obstacle for today's shoot or not.

@brainolioski  FYI Mac OS Monterey.  I just tested tethering again on my M1 MBP with the external monitor attached and on. With LrC on the MBP screen, I started tethering which of course requires a restart of LrC under Rosetta. I was using the 15' Tether Tools orange cable. My D500 tethering worked fine in all regards. But, I wasn't able to get LrC to recognize the D850 with any combination of cable connections and/or monitor connection. The D850 data light lit up when I connected, but the camera was not recognized.

To further confirm the tethering with these two cameras, I did the test on my Win 10 PC which is my main processing machine. LrC tethering works perfectly with the D500, but I learned through wiggling the cable in the D850, the USB port on that camera is intermittent. I will probably send that camera to Nikon service once my Z9 arrives and hopefully tethering for that camera in LrC will be implemented soon 🙂

So, I have no reason to question the operation of LrC tethering on the M1 MBP regardless of the screen/monitor configuration. It works fine for me.

Thank you, Kenneth. I appreciate you testing that. My 5D Mark IV is recognized and connects. I have two separate monitors for studio and location. (1) Dell 2720Q 4K {in studio} connected via USB-C and (2) Dell 24" connected via HDMI {for location}. I have had the same issue with both where the tether control window most times does not appear. Also having difficulty re-establishing connection if computer or camera goes to sleep and images get stalled in camera or camera freezes and usually requires the restart of LR and camera both. 

 

Regarding your intermittent USB connection with D850 camera. Maybe try a right angle tether tools cable and some gaff tape. I have an L bracket and right angle plug and I started securing the camera end with tape when using my old computer (2016 MBP - the USB-C ports were completely loose and even after I had them replaced by Apple, they quickly wore out again) I also taped the cable to the table to minimize movement into the computer as well. The connection was so finicky, but the tape made it much more secure. I still do this with the new MBP and it feels very stable.

I will retest tethering on my M1Max MBP with the 27" BenQ 4K monitor attached.

@brainolioski As I said in that other thread, tethering is working perfectly for me on my M1 MBP Max with the D500. I get the control window and also get fully functional live view operation in LrC Tethered Mode.

I have no idea whether Rosetta is involved or not.

It seems to be the external monitor causing the issue. If I disconnect the external, then I can see the tether control window.

There is another thread on this issue. I'm pretty sure the solution is to use a USB cable specifically designed for tethering, like you can get from Tether Tools.

Thank you for your suggestion. The other thread is not about the controller window not appearing specifically. In Rosetta mode, I am able to usually get a connection to LR, but am having to trigger shutter manually. I am using a tether tools cable with USB-C to right angle USB 3.0 Micro B. Direct connection and also taped to table and taped to the camera for extra stability. New MBP has a solid connection with the cable. This is a software issue with LR in Rosetta emulation mode I think. For some reason the controller window doesn't always show. Sometimes it does. Also sometimes the images arent feeding in. Most times they are, but must be shot from camera or from going through the menu to trigger capture. I'm sure this will improve with future releases but it's frustrating. I wish dependable tethered shooting was a higher priority for Adobe.

Does Canon Utility work?

I have not tried Canon utility. The tether connection with LR mostly works. The issue is the controller window with the shutter release button is not always visible. Sometimes it works fine but more often than not, it isn't visible.
