Updating to V9 from V8.4 - Catalog will not update

Following the upgrade to Lightroom Classic V9 (Windows 10) several catalogs upgraded successfully. But the next had the error message:
‘Lightroom encountered problems when trying to update the format of the catalog file and cannot use this catalog in this version of Lightroom

For a split second I think I saw "adding depth information" before the error message appeared.

The catalog opened under V8.4 without any errors.

I tried to use the most recent backup but encountered the same error.

The location of the catalog and associated image files has not changed.

Would really appreciate a solution please.

One thing to try that oddly worked  for  two members, reboot  the computer. Not explained why this worked. Might have more to do with their computer than with Lightroom Classic ir their catalog.

Hi, I tried this in the hope it would fix my problem but it's still the same. Still getting the same alerts and unable to upgrade catalogue. Trying not to freak out... Thanks.

Things I tried which failed are:

  • Running 'Optimize Catalog' under 8.4.1
  • Synchronising all folders
  • Using a backup catalog
  • Exporting the main folder as a catalog

Exporting individual folders as a catalog was a partial success with some converting and some not.

Until the patch becomes available the only solution would appear to be to repair the catalog which is an SQLite database. Fine for the IT user but not so useful for the photographer.

After a day's work I have recovered about 95% of the corrupted catalog and am just contemplating whether I can be bothered with the rest.

For those of you who are in panic mode I understand that Adobe are aware of the fault and are testing a fix. Your best solution would be to roll back to 8.4.1 and patiently wait.

Hi, I am having the same issue but it's my one and only Catalogue File that can not be updated... I tired a backup Catalogue File and experienced the same error message. Really hope someone can help!

Out of interest how did you open up V8.4 if the Lightroom had upgraded to V9?

Thanks.

If you have upgraded to 9.0 roll back to 8.4.1 uninstalls 9.0. But Adobe gives you 2 licenses so in my case I have 9.0 running on my desktop computer and 8.4.1 running on my notebook for testing.

Hi Chris, Thanks for the reply... How do I 'roll back' to 8.4.1? Apologies if this is a silly question...
