Unable to merge DNG and NEF photos in LR and PS

Hello,

 

I am trying to do a panorama of recently taken Solar eclipse pics and its not working either in LR nor PS.

The error i am getting is "Unable to merge selected photos, no matching imagery found". I did a panorama of Lunar eclipse 2 years back and it worked fine.

 

Below my system config, anything to do with this being MacOS?

 

Lightroom version: 7.2 x64 [ 20240214-0910-27200e9 ] (Feb 14 2024)

Operating system: macOS
OS Version: macOS 12.6.3 (21G419)
Application architecture: x64
Computer model: MacBookPro16,2 / Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-1038NG7 CPU @ 2.00GHz
Logical processor count: 8
Processor speed: 2.0 GHz
Built-in memory: 16,384.0 MB

Any help appreciated.

I am trying to understand your aim for merging images (Panorama or HDR).

Are you trying to create an image with multiple phases of the eclipse, taken as the eclipse progressed.

If so, that is a job for Photoshop. Lightroom-Classic won't like overlapping blank sky areas (no details to align) and so fails.

You have Lightroom Desktop NOT Lightroom Classic. Please post in the LR forum.

I am using LR from Adobe cloud, how can it be desktop?

You are using the Desktop client of Lightroom Cloud .. Lightroom Classic is the on computer version.

DNG and NEF

'Are you referring to not being able to merge DNG photos and also not being able to merge NEF photos. Or are you not able to merge DNG and NEF photos as in a mixed set of DNG and NEF?

 

DNG + DNG + DNG, does not mege

and

NEF + NEF + NEF,  does not merge

 

or

 

DNG + NEF, does not merge

So how will i merge NEF RAW files in LR? I did the same thing 2 years ago. I am ok DNG+DNG or NEF+NEF

It sounds like there may not be enough solid overlap. This is pattern recognition, and about 40 % is required.

    The number 40% is mentioned in the Photoshop documentation for Auto-Align, and it's likely that the same algorithm is used in Lightroom. The practical considerations seem to be the same.

     

    One shortcoming is that "empty" areas don't count. There are no patterns to recognize. There has to be someting going on, some variation in tone and color, that the algorithm can latch on to. On the other hand, high frequency noise is excluded, since it's random and doesn't help.

     

    So you can already see that this is a huge problem for any kind of astronomy and astrophotography. Most of it is by definition noise on an empty background.

     

    There is a feature request over on the Photoshop forum, can't find it now, but I did vote for it - asking for updated algorithms. It seems to me this would be a prime candidate for AI.
