Question

Circular type path typing straight?

For some reason, in some situations, my Type command will not attach to the circular Path I have created.

I create a circular Path on a new layer, name it "RingOne", and make it active. Then I select the Type tool and place the "I-beam" cursor over the circle at "12 o'clock." The curvy lines appears on the cursor and I begin to type, but the Type goes straight instead of along the curve.

I notice in the layer panel that when I begin to type, the new layer, "RingOne", becomes inactive and another new layer is automatically created with the generic name: "Layer 2" and this layer mysteriously becomes the active layer.

So far I've not been able to untangle myself from this mess.

You create a new layer, but the type goes into it's own new layer - this is normal behavior. A path is not part of any layer - it's its own thing. Type will always create it's own layer.

When working with a circle you need to have your cursor over the path - inside the path will fill the circle with type. Watch closely when mousing over the path to make sure you get just on the edge.

If you have Illustrator - I personally think this much easier to do in Illustrator.

Thank you.

Really found helpful your advice about layers.

I could not figure that out!

Try this:

1. Choose the Elliptical Marquee Tool, hold down the Shift key and drag a diagonal which will produce a circular selection.

2. Choose the Paths panel and click on the Make Work Path from Selection symbol at the bottom of the Path panel.

3. Choose the Type tool and in the Options bar choose font, size and color. Then click anywhere on the path. Start typing.

4. Choose the Commit checkmark in the Type Options bar. The path will disappear.
