Content Aware Fill – "Crop Expand Image" – Bug – PS 27.9.1

Hi,

Expanding the image while using the Crop Tool (the color in this case, about a solid gray) using Content Aware Fill - makes wrong color, in my case after expanding a lighter frame at the previous image edge borders and a lighter gray color is used for the expanded areas. Is this a known bug? I’ve downgraded to 27.8, no issues there.

Hi Patrik,

Yes, if the same file/process works correctly in 27.8 but produces the lighter edge in 27.9.1, that does sound like a regression in the Content-Aware Crop/Expand behavior.

As a workaround, you could expand the canvas first and use Content-Aware Fill manually. I’d also report it to Adobe with the exact steps and a sample file so they can reproduce it.

I can’t reproduce. It works without problems here on 16 bit files - even for flat solid color, which is a very special use case.

It would help if you told us exactly what doesn’t work as expected.

I’m still on version 27.9.1 until they fix the color management bug in 27.10.

Well, do you got available a Mac Studio M1 to try, as I do. It does not work on my machine. Frustrating indeed. Could you please report to developers. Ive been reporting earlier and work full time as a retoucher and this a very major issue at my side. (25+ years user of PS, so I’m aware of having the latest updates of the software, Mac OS and so on, not sure it will help at this moment to upload all info etc.) I attach a video + a still image of an expanded background below, please forward to developers. You mention v27.9 but your video shows you are using the Beta version of Photoshop. The current version of the Beta is 27.11.0 m.3669
I also could not replicate the issue in release v27.9.1 or Beta 27.11.0 m.3669
This is on Windows 11 - hopefully someone can test this on the Mac

Content Aware Fill since version 27.9 in does not work in 16bit mode.

I hope for a quick bug fix as I’m working always in 16bit.

Try replicate by make a solid color image in 16 bit, expand the image (on all sides) by using CAF and the issue appears.

Hey, @patrikl. I’ve tested this on Photoshop 27.10, and Photoshop (beta), and I couldn’t recreate this. Does it help if you zoom in on the image? Have you tried the method I’ve shared to reset Photoshop’s preferences?

I’ve added my video with 6000x6000px at 16bit matching the zoom levels.

@Sameer K Hi Samer, The bug is in 16 bit. I always work in 16 bit. I hope this can be solved quickly. I did upload a video, with a reply. Not sure why it didn't got through. Anyway I hope for a fast bug fix. Thank you!

The OS update to 26.6.2 (25G83) did not make any changes to the issue. I use the CAF expanding each workday so this a major issue for me. I noticed the issue seems to only appear on the bottom and the right side of the image (don’t matter what image/color of background). I can for now no longer update PS. The version working without issues is 27.8.0. I provide a video, not sure it help you though. I hope you can report this to the developers. I would appreciate this. I attach a video of expanding image in PS Beta version 27.11.0. Thanks.

Hey, @patrikl. Welcome to the Photoshop Community. I'll help you figure this out. Please share the system info from Photoshop Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload & attach here.

Does the problem exist if you use Photoshop (beta)? Get Photoshop (beta) from the Apps section > Beta Apps in the Creative Cloud desktop app. Please ensure there are no stale preferences in your Photoshop. You can go to the location of the preference folder below and rename it to back it up. (https://adobe.ly/3u7u84j)

This method is more effective compared to the in-app Reset Preferences at quit method.

macOS: Hold down the Option key in the Finder when using the Go menu. The library will appear below the current user's home directory.

Library > Preferences > Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Rename the Adobe Photoshop folder by adding a .old at the end. (Adobe Photoshop 2026 > Rename > Adobe Photoshop 2026.old)

This will give Photoshop a fresh start as a new installation.

Yes the issue persists with Beta and the deleted Settings.

I will upload System Info and a image sample of the issue (using Crop Tool expanding image with Content Aware Fill setting).

Thanks for adding the system info. I've tried to recreate this on macOS v26.6.2, but the CAF worked as expected. So, updating the macOS may help here.

If that does not help, could you record your workflow in a video and share that?
