could not save because write access was not granted (Mac OS)

I keep getting the above error when working off of my xserve in photoshop. It is new in CS5 which we have recently upgraded to. Several people at my office are getting it. Sometimes it displays a random name with afp in front of it (I assume it is the temp name when photoshop is swapping out the new file for the old file.) It only seems to happen with psd and psb files. I have write access to the volume in question and it doesn't matter if I am the only one accessing the folder or not. I can save as and it seems to work; but it does delete the file.

Very frustrating. Anybody have any ideas? My IT guys are struggling with it, and one of them used to work on the Flash team as well as at Apple.

Correct answer Jeff-Adobe

Hi Criss,

I get what you write. I realize the issue may not be with you.

Sorry for talking past each other. If changing the code in PS to be more like other adobe apps is not an option I think only Apple can fix this particular issue we have isolated.

Might be worth a tech note from Adobe still since it is a pretty bad outcome of the issue as things are now that only seems to affect Photoshop and Xsan 3 customers.

As an end customer it's very easy to get the impression that this is a

Photoshop bug since the issue only occurs in Photoshop.

Once again if you want my help to isolate the effects of the issue I can help with access to our system to isolate.

I am sorry for my tone in last posts, issues like these are very frustrating but I should not let that frustration result in unfair comments here. (I would edit out the quark comment if I could).

Hi everyone,

The recent Mac OS X 10.8.4 released yesterday has specifically named the following fix:

  • Resolves an issue saving files to an Xsan volume from certain applications

referenced from this Apple KB article. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5730

If you are still experiencing this issue, please update to 10.8.4 and then re-test in your environment. Please let us know if you are still experiencing issues.

The KB article also mentions this fix:

  • A fix for an issue that may prevent changes to files made over NFS from displaying
  • A fix for an issue that may prevent documents from being saved to a server using SMB

In general this OS update has a number of network save fixes in it that we recommend users try out.

Thanks,

Jeff

All the other adobe programs have found ways around the issue. Photoshop is claiming that users lose files if they disable their extra error checking steps which is what is causing the issue. No problems saving in illustrator for me. Only photoshop. Doesn't sound like it's just an OS problem to me.

No, most other applications ignore the issue (fail to check for errors).

Yes, it really is an OS or server problem.  Photoshop simply does more error checking, because we have seen similar problems in the past and don't want customers to invisibly lose their data.

And all those other inferior programs including adobe programs seem to work fine and have never invisibly lost any data. I would be very interested to know how many users of photoshop have had this error.

Hi everyone, just got on this thread since one of my many users on osx 10.10.3 with adobe photoshop cc 2014 is experiencing the same thing with a windows server 2008 R2, we tried connecting with cifs (which is ridiculous in 2015) and smb but same error occurs no matter how we connect, no issues to save over and over with any other applications, I cannot believe that Adobe has not resolved this specific issue after 5 years, after countless updates and new versions,

Adobe CC was supposed to be rewritten from the ground up, clearly the same code has been used to rewrite photoshop, for the amount of money adobe is now asking for their software, which you cannot even own since CC is based on a lease schema, no pay no software, i believe they either take this matter seriously or we should just sue them there is enough users on this only thread to start the process, please fix your crappy code.

Adobe has resolved it -- it is not a Photoshop or Adobe issue, but an OS or server issue.  As noted earlier in the topic - Apple already fixed some of those issues in OS updates.

No, Adobe CC was not rewritten in any way - not sure where you got that misinformation from.

MacOS 10.10 does still have some issues with SMB connections, most of which are avoided by using CIFS instead of SMB.  Apple knows about the issues in MacOS 10.10 and is working to solve them.

I'm on 10.10.3 and this is suddenly happening.  Very frustrating.

Anyone have this symptom? (regarding saving in InDesign 2014)

Yosemite 10.10 Server, Macs on 10.10 as well...

SMB sharing ON/AFP ON, Macs cannot save to the shared volume…

SMB sharing OFF/AFP ON and they save just fine...

Problem is, PC's can't access the shared volumes with SMB off… Any thoughts?

Yosemite uses smb3 by default.

I gather all your macs running Yosemite?

Are they using afp to connect? - Why not just connect them with smb which is faster than afp?

(smb will not enable Spotlight search on server - the only real downside of smb3)

Maybe you could enable smb1 (CIFS) on the server to connect older OSXes?

All Macs are on Yosemite... All are new iMacs...

Server was upgraded (actually a clean install to a new volume) to Yosemite as well... The problem is that IF I have SMB active on the shared volumes InDesign will not save the changes to a file to the volume...  Even if the Macs are connected via SMB... Tried to connect them with CIFS but still had the same problem saving to the drives...

Tonight I'll turn AFP off, connect all Macs via CIFS and see what happens... Have not tried any testing with AFP turned off... Worth a shot...

Having read a fair chunk of this thread, it seems everyone is focused on this being a SERVER issue (and windows related), I am here to tell you it is not limited to those two factors.

Here is my setup:

iMac 27" Retina connected to a couple of LaCie Thunderbolt drives containing all of my work files.

Macbook Pro Retina that I connect to the two external LaCie drives mentioned above, (via Wireless network) which are connected to my iMac.

I have been using this setup for years, no Windows machines involved, and no servers involved. If I open a Photoshop file off the LaCie thunderbolt drive on my MacBook Pro, it simply will not save, saying I do not have write permissions.

The Facts:

1) I DO HAVE WRITE PERMISSIONS!

2) ALL DRIVES FORMATTED FOR MAC AND JOURNALED (No NTFS or FAT etc)

3) ALL OTHER FILE FORMATS OPEN AND SAVE FINE

Based on the facts above, this is an issue with PHOTOSHOP and nothing else. Nothing mentioned in this entire thread does anything to resolve the problem. I can not believe this problem has been around for so long and not been fixed.

I have no idea why I am suddenly having the problem as I did not prior to changing to the new iMac, which is when i 'think' it started. Surely SOMEONE at Adobe can resolve this???

You may want to start a new thread if your issue is not server related.

What version of Photoshop are you using? (Is it up to date with all the available updates)

I am using CS6 (13.0.6 x64). As far as I am aware, that is the latest version?

Make new user on server.

Voila! All work normally.

No idea what the bombardment of emails hitting my inbox notifying me that 'reply marked as helpful' are supposed to mean. The first of them directs me to a message from more than 2 years ago telling me to upgrade to OSX 10.8 when I am currently on 10.10.  I'll look outstide Adobe's "support" forum for help with Adobe's apparent unsupported photoshop issue. This forum is a complete waste of time.

Chris,

My permissions on the directory that I am writing to has read and write permissions. Every other kind of file saves to it. Photoshop is the only file type (when saving for web and other devices) that throws this error.

If it were simple, surely it wouldn't be necessary to cross examine the answer out of this "support" forum.

If you could kindly refer me to the particular post (by reference number) where the answer is set out, I would appreciate adobe's support for photoshop on mac.

Many thanks

Is there an answer to this yet. The answer marked correct at the top of this forum says to upgrade to 10.8. I'm on 10.10 and still having this issue with photoshop. I really need to use photoshop and find it incredibly frustrating that there is no support for this issue.

Yes, it has been answered dozens of times, including in the post right before yours.

Chris, how is that an answer. The complaints in this thread identify that permissions are set to read and write (which mine are and always have been). Is there something more that needs to be done? If so, kindly identify what it is. Many thanks.

Let me say that this has NOT been answered for those just coming… Because the first reply is says answered.

I have try AFP and SMB and both on and off… Still same problem.

network env… mavericks server, 10 clients from 10.6.x and 10.7… cs 3-5… all is fine..

Just installed Yosemite Client with cs6.. I am now experiencing the issue.  No other application is having write access not granted with the exception of 10.10 CS6..

I have tried turning on and off previews.. kill time machine… anything that may be touching the file.  still no go..

For Adobe to say " we don't support server" solutions is not living in the real production world.  An artist, at the very least should be able to open a file on a server, do a crop or some other simple adjustment and do a save.  It should be  that simple.. but no can do..

Adobe, would you please apprise us as to where Adobe is on this issue.  What is the latest update?

Thank you,

vix

Is this still an issue with mac servers?  Have a client who is running a Win 2008 box and gets the error and looking at moving to a mac mini solution with Thunderbolt 2 storage
