# Generative Remove runs on the CPU instead of the GPU since version 27.9.1

**Issue summary**
Since updating to Photoshop 27.9.1, the Remove tool in Generative mode loads about 6 GB of data into the graphics card memory, then performs the actual work on the processor instead of the graphics card. The graphics card stays at idle power for the whole operation. A removal that used to complete quickly now takes several minutes.

**Product and version**
Photoshop desktop version 27.9.1 (build 20260803.r.1 65900e1)

**Last version where it worked correctly**
Photoshop 27.8.0 (build 20260610.r.13 4081857). The problem started immediately after updating on 6 August 2026.

**Operating system**
Windows 11 Pro, version 26200

**Hardware**
Graphics card: NVIDIA RTX PRO 4000 Blackwell, 24 GB, driver 32.0.15.9672
Processor: Intel i9-13900K (32 logical cores)
Memory: 128 GB

**Steps to reproduce**
1. Open any photo.
2. Select the Remove tool.
3. In the options bar, make sure the generative mode is turned on.
4. Paint over a small area of the image.
5. Watch the Task Manager Performance tab, or any graphics card monitoring tool, while the operation runs.

**Expected result**
The removal is processed on the graphics card and completes quickly, as it did in version 27.8.0.

**Actual result**
The removal is processed on the processor. It takes several minutes for a small area. During the operation:

- The processor runs at 74 percent of 32 cores, peaking at 97 percent.
- The graphics card draws 12.8 watts, which is its exact idle level. It draws over 100 watts when it is genuinely working.
- Photoshop does not appear in the per-application graphics usage counters at all.
- Photoshop uses up to 50 GB of system memory.

The graphics card memory is still filled at the start: selecting the tool raises it from 5.6 GB to 11.7 GB. That memory is then released partway through the operation, without ever having been used for the work.

**Measurements**

Recorded once per second using nvidia-smi for graphics card power, utilisation and memory, and the Windows performance counters for per-application graphics memory and usage. Test conditions: a single small selection, all other programs using the graphics card shut down, and 18.9 GB of graphics memory free before starting.

Out of 169 measurements, only 3 exceeded 40 watts, and all 3 occurred while the data was being loaded, none while the work was being done.

**Workaround**

Turning off the generative mode and using the classic Remove is instantaneous. Only the generative path is affected. This may help narrow down where the problem is.

**Things I checked first, so they can be ruled out**

- Not a shortage of graphics memory. 18.9 GB was free during the test, and the shared system memory figure stayed flat at its normal level, so nothing overflowed either.
- Not a disabled graphics card in preferences. Use Graphics Processor and OpenCL are both switched on, and the sniffer crash counter is zero.
- Not a detection problem. The sniffer log ends normally and reports the RTX PRO 4000 as the preferred device, with an OpenCL compute score of 19,138 against 339 for the built-in Intel graphics.
- Not caused by other software. All other programs using the graphics card were shut down for the final test.
- Not related to selection size or to processing several areas at once. The same result occurs on a single small selection and on a batch of twenty.

**Impact**

I bought this graphics card one month ago, for 2,000 euros, specifically so that the local generative Remove model would run on my own machine. It worked exactly as intended until this update. Since 27.9.1 the card is no longer used for this work, and the tool is too slow to use in my retouching workflow.

Loading 6 GB into the graphics card and then not using it is the worst of both outcomes: the memory cost is paid in full, and so is the processing time. If the generative path cannot run on this hardware, the data should not be loaded onto the card in the first place. If it can run, it should be used.

**What I am asking**

1. Please confirm whether this change is intentional. If generative Remove now runs on the processor on some hardware, it would help to know which.
2. If it is a regression, please fix it. At the very least, stop filling the graphics card memory when the work will not run there.
3. Please consider an option to use the graphics card for generative tasks, so that people with suitable hardware can actually use it.

I can provide the full measurement files or repeat any test that would help.

    AI removal on device uses GPU to detect the area's when you ask to select distractions
    but for the actual removal it uses entirely CPU and it takes a very long time

    You are correct, and the problem started on PS and Beta 27.9.1+. To date: Adobe knows there is a problem, but they haven't isolated/fixed the specific regression in the NVIDIA on-device inference/qualification path sufficiently to ship a reliable correction. In the meantime, I have reinstalled Beta V27.9 which works on my RTX 16GB, and all the updated AI Cloud models work accordingly, as AI operations of the cloud is not dependent on the PC device. It might be better for Adobe to eliminate the On Device remove option feature until there is a fix.

    I reinstalled the older PS Beta 27.9 on both my workstation and laptop, and the on-device remove tool works quickly on my Nvidia RTX 40/50 series with 16GB VRAM. I’m running the current Nvidia Studio Driver 610.88. However, updating to PS 27.9.1 or PS Beta 17.9.11 causes the on-device remove tool to fail. Using the Cloud option works, but I still need an update for on-device to function properly. This issue has been ongoing for nearly two months. BTW - No logs are necessary to send as the issue can be recreated at Adobe, then read the log.

    Since the remove tool doesn’t use AI credits on the cloud, it might as well be used there until the on-device option works again like it did in V27.9.0. For offline use without a WiFi connection, installing the Beta V27.9 on a laptop during travel is a good workaround. It seems the PS team isn’t in a rush to fix this issue until the next version is released, and that’s a big maybe!

    Same issue. Generative AI on device uses CPU and RAM, graphics card remains idle and isn’t used:

    i9 14900k, 64GB RAM, RTX 5090

    No need to send logs. Just create one on your test PC using the latest PS/Beta and the on-device remove tool set to Device and run remove on any Nvidia RTX 16GB card. Stalls for a long, long time as PS is not recognizing the GPU for this function. Then copy the log and send it to programming. It’s easy, as all PCs will write the same log readout issue. The remove tool set 0n-Device tool worked in V27.9.0 until PS was updated, then a problem. Removing using the Cloud works but not on Device.

    Works fine on V 27.9.1 on the cloud, but now try the Device, not the cloud, to remove objects, It’s a sit and wait. V27.9.0 worked fine until PS updated on both regular and beta. Do more homework please.

    Photoshop 27.9.0 and Beta 27.9.0 run smoothly and quickly with on-device processing on all 16GB RTX video cards. However, updating to 27.9.1 or newer causes the Remove Tool to stall for a long time, suggesting the updated versions no longer support Nvidia RTX 16GB cards for on-device processing. Both the current updated versions (27.9.1 and Beta 27.11) fail to recognize and conflict with the Nvidia driver. This appears to be a Photoshop bug, not a Nvidia issue, since the earlier versions worked perfectly. I’ve reinstalled older version PS Beta 27.9.0 on my laptop for travel when WiFi or a hotspot isn’t available. Please fix this PS Bug….

    The new on-device Generative AI Remove Tool works perfectly in Photoshop version 27.9 and Beta 27.9, but stops functioning in any later versions when used with Nvidia RTX 16 GB cards. There’s a bug in the newer versions of Photoshop that isn’t recognized by the RTX cards. I’m still waiting for updates to both the regular and Beta versions from Photoshop. The RTX cards run smoothly on both 27.9 versions. I previously reported that my MSI laptop with an RTX 4090 and 16 GB of VRAM performs flawlessly until I update Photoshop beyond 27.9. I’ve kept that version installed on my laptop for when I’m traveling without internet or Wi-Fi access to be able to use the remove tool on the laptop.

    I have two machines. One has an RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB, and on this machine I get the “not enough VRAM”-message. The other machine has an older RTX 4060 Ti 16 GB - and here it works, although it’s pretty slow.

     

    Both are Asus GPUs of identical model type and name, running the same driver, just different generations; 4 vs 5.

     

    So this has apparently nothing to do with type or brand of GPU. It just seems random, and a work in progress. I’m sure they’ll get there eventually.

    Here, it's exactly the same with an RTX 5090 and on a second PC with an RTX 4080. In fact, Photoshop actually crashed on the PC with the RTX 4080.

    As already described in this thread a month ago,

    it worked with the beta version (Adobe Photoshop Version: 27.9.0 20260616.m.3575 199f0a1 x64 (beta, PublicBeta) . Why it isn't working properly again now… Adobe, Adobe… 🤔
