I can't figure out how to draw a curved line and not a semicircle

I'm making a map that gives distances between cities, so I need to make curved lines between them (as if to show flights).  I was told to use the curved line tool, but the pen tool always wants to connect the last point of the line back to the first point and make an entire shape - but I just need a line!?

Hi

Select the Curvature Pen Tool and draw your line, place an anchor point anywhere in the line and then drag to draw the shape you want.

Make sure that you have it set to Shape with no Fill and set the stroke to the desired size
