Question

I can't open any saved photoshop files, instead it keeps giving me a "Could not open "file name" because of a program error.

Everytime I try and open a file saved from photoshop, it doesn’t let me, and keeps giving me the error in the image. It happens when I try and open from my Adobe Cloud AND from my files on my laptop saved from photoshop.

The button “Learn how to fix” is not useful and isn’t helping me fix the issue. I’ve tried restarting my laptop, using an older version of photoshop, uninstalling and re-installing the latest photoshop updates, and using the web version, but no luck.

@valkyriecain666 If I was working on Photoshop with a tight deadline, and this happened during that, I would be scared (loss of time) and mad too. Personally, I would uninstall Photoshop and maybe even Crative Cloud Desktop? and use Adobe Cleaner Tool too? The Adobe Cleaner Tool is Adobe’s deep‑clean utility. It removes broken installs, leftover files, and corrupted preferences so you can reinstall your apps.https://helpx.adobe.com/ca/creative-cloud/apps/troubleshoot/diagnostics-repair-tools/run-creative-cloud-cleaner-tool.html

I would use this, especially if you keep on get that message, the tool will clear out bad preferences and caches that cause this from opening a file

Also, don’t use a previous version of installation. Download a fresh version from Adobe website

Try to manually removing the preferences files. This is the most complete method for restoring to the default state. The manual method ensures all preferences which may be causing a problem and prevents Photoshop form loading.

Please follow the steps below:

Quit Photoshop.
Navigate to Photoshop's Preferences folder.
MacOS: …Users/[user name]/Library/Preferences/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings
Windows: …Users/[user name]/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop [version]/Adobe Photoshop [version] Settings

Note: The User Library folder is hidden by default. To access the content in the hidden folders see here:
MacOS: Access hidden macOS library files
Windows: Show hidden files, folders, and filename extensions in Windows
Drag the entire Adobe Photoshop [Version] Settings folder to a safe place to a backup your settings
Open Photoshop.

New preferences files with the default settings will be created automatically.

Thanks for your reply, @AxelMatt. I tried doing all this, and it’s still not letting me open that file. I’ve made quite a few copies of it on my laptop and on the Adobe Cloud to try and get it to work, but it’s just refusing to cooperate. I think that file is just gone for good at this point, unfortunately 😭.

I also think resetting the Adobe Photoshop Settings might have fixed the issue for future files, but I’m not 100% sure. I’ll keep an eye out in case it happens again.

The version I’m using is Adobe Photoshop 2026, and I have automatic updates turned on.

Does the error occur only with this appropriate file? Or more/all files are affected?

If it’s only one files then it’s maybe damaged.

By any chance, did you recently update Photoshop or your computer? If so, this could absolutely trigger a Program Error. Could it be either corrupted Preferences or the GPU? Try disabling GPU acceleration first before resetting your preferences, as this will reset back to the default settings.

Under Preferences (Command K (MAC) or Control K (PC), under Performance, uncheck 'Use Graphics Processor' — currently mine is off! Click OK and restart Photoshop.

Try opening an image. If you able to open your image, you are good to go.

If by chance you are still having issues, go back to your preferences, and under General, try resetting Preferences on Quit. Before you do this, if there are any set brushes, that you have, make sure you xport thm first, or else resetting your preferences will wipe out all custom brushes

I have my Photoshop set to update automatically. There was an update a day or so after I saved the file I was working on, and then suddenly with the new update, it wouldn’t let me open the file.

I tried disabling the “Use Graphics Processor”, and resetting Preferences on Quit, but still no luck.

Thanks for trying to help, though.

Can you open other file formats? Where exactly are the files stored on the laptop, on the system drive, or an external drive?

If this is caused by corrupt preferences a reinstall normally won’t replace those. Go into your user account and find the “Adobe Photoshop 2026 Settings” folder. Move it to the desktop, so a fresh one can be rebuilt. It’s here:

Users > You > AppData > Roaming > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop 2026

Also, please post the full Help > System Info from Photoshop.

I can open single image file formats like pngs, just not psds from photoshop. The files on my laptop are in my downloads, on the system drive. Not an external one.

I tried resetting the Adobe Photoshop 2026 Settings folder like you said, but the issue is still happening.

Everytime I try and open a file saved from photoshop, it doesn’t let me, and keeps giving me the error in the image. It happens when I try and open from my Adobe Cloud AND from my files on my laptop saved from photoshop.

The button “Learn how to fix” is not useful and isn’t helping me fix the issue. I’ve tried restarting my laptop, using an older version of photoshop, uninstalling and re-installing the latest photoshop updates, and using the web version, but no luck.
