Marquee tool crashes photoshop every time

After a marquee tool selection has been made and I clear it away by clicking, Photoshop freezes (not responding) and never recovers. This has made this program completely useless to me.

Rather than clicking to deselect, what happens if you use CMD/CTRL + D to deselect?

When Photoshop crashes or freezes, this is the first thing to do, try resetting your Photoshop preferences. Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) immediately after launching Photoshop. You will be prompted to delete the current settings. You can also reset preferences upon a quit if Photoshop is running by going into General Preferences>General>Reset on Quit.

If that doesn't work, a few other areas to try:

Go to Preferences > Performance... and uncheck Multithreaded Compositing - and restart Photoshop. Better?

If that doesn't work, Go back into Preferences > Performance... click Advanced Settings... and uncheck "GPU Compositing" - then restart Photoshop. Better?

What is your Photoshop Version?
If you are using 2022, various crash bugs related to the selection tool have been reported since last year.
Recently, Adobe staff said it was related to NVIDIA GPUs, and in 23.5 (the latest version), crashes were less frequent, but...Because it was temporarily changed to be handled by the CPU, the speed is slow and crashes still occur. In addition, most of the functions used by GPUs are not working properly.
So, recommend that you install the 2021 or 2020 version.

Of course, it's good to reset and reinstall your configuration before rolling back, but consider it because it's officially recognized that GPU-related crashes occur across all 2022 version builds.

What have you done for all-purpose trouble-shooting so far?

Restoring Preferences after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved might be a good starting point:
