Photo Restoration Neural Filter Temporarily Disabled

  • October 26, 2022

The Photo Restoration filter inside the Neural Filters is temporarily disabled due to an error. I'm currently running macOS Ventura 13.0 and Photoshop 24.0. Is there a fix for this, or will I need to wait for a PS dot update?

Thanks!

John

Mine has also not worked for 3 days.  I've tried done everything suggested in this thread and also uninstalled and re-installed photoshop and installed the beta version.  All with no joy.

I've also tried applying the neural filter to a layer containing just the face, and a B&W conversion of that layer.  Also no joy.

I've ticked the "not satisfied" box on the neural filter and supplied my photo with the feedback.

The photo is a headshot and the "facial smoothing" neural filter has no problem detecting the face so I don't think that is the issue.

I have reported this too, but have found a temporary work-around which appears to work for me. By default, the Neural Filter for Photo Restoration has the values set at Photo Enhancement: 50, Enhance Face 60.  When processing at these values on some photos of lower quality *say old B&W images.. you occasionally get the errror.

However if you turn the Enhance Face down to 0, and run the filter with just the Photo Enhancement & Scratch Reduction values set, accept the result and THEN, open Neural Filters again, setting the Photo Enhancement & Scratch Reduction to 0 (switching these off)  and then adjust the Enhance Face to a value, it processes it with no error.

Not ideal, as the filter should work with one pass.. but its still in Beta, so bound to be the odd kink/issue

How To Resolve This Error

Might be a good idea to change the syntax from "Weve disabled this filter because of an error" to "try setting face enhancement to 0" or such like. As that seems to cure it for me also, although I do actually want to use the face enhancement feature so its still broken for my intent and purpose.

With the current message, I visualize some great PS overseer is pulling some lever in a Willy Wonka type factory, disabling the filter. Simply by changing this message or having the system turn down the facial enhancement automatically and give you a message it's done so, would stop so much confusion there's been about this.

Since you posted this over a year ago.  Photo restoration is still in beta and still not working.  Pretty disappointing.  I would expect more from Photoshop.

I've tried all the fixes folks have noted, but nothing works.

It's become such an important feature for us at this point but it remains hit and miss. It is especially frustrating with lower contrast images because it puts a bit "t" shape through the image.

So, here's my workaround while this error is occuring: The error usually occurs when there are too many faces in the photo (a group portrait for example). What I do is, restore the photo with no face enhancement, crop the photo down to contain only one or two faces, run the filter, copy the result, step back in history to the restored group shot again and paste the faces over the portrait. Then, I erase the surrounding elements, leaving just the restored faces.

This is ridiculous, to have to do all those things for a function to work.
I expect Adobe to resolve the situation. By the way, the picture I am
trying to fix has only one person, nothing special about it.

I got the same error with the 3rd tif I used but found it worked consistently when I used jpgs. I'm still testing my theory though.

Ok, I turned the "enhance face" to 0 and it worked on the picture that I had previously gotten the error on.

Mine is having the same issue, but then I started using it on other photos and it worked on the other ones with the exception of two. I noticed that if it doesn't recognize the face right when you open it and its on the face smoothing tab, it won't work. Even if the face is very visable! Super annoying.

yeah...I hope it improves over time. You need to pull down the face enhancement tab to zero after it fails and then it will apply it's degraining but not do the face enhancement. No need to re run the filter. The message it gives you is really misleading.

This filter had become critical in my workflow when trying to drain scans of Kodak disc film. By layering it in at about 30 percent it can really make this tiny format of film look a lot better without looking artifical in the way the the "photo restoration" filter will do if applied too aggresively. Now though, I can hardly use it because I keep getting the massage "We've temporarily disabled this filter because of an error".

I've seen other posts about this but no answers that make sense for my situation. I'm hopeful someone will have an answer...even if it's just to say its an bug in the filter and I'll need to wait for a fix.

Hello,

Is there any solution? I have the same problem on PS24.2 and actual Beta, the Neural Filters is temporarily disabled due to an error. New installation of flter and PS do not fix the problem.

Welcome to the Photoshop community. I'll need more info to help you figure this out. Please share the system info of Photoshop from Help > System info > Copy & paste into a text document > upload to Creative Cloud files (https://assets.adobe.com/files) and share it with us.

The Photo Restoration neural filter is in beta, so your feedback is well-heard.

Try these things & let me know the outcomes:

Let me know how it goes. Thanks!

Hello Sameer,

thanks for your support.

A image with an identifiable face works on PS24.2 and on PS Beta.

My image has no persons, so there is an report "the Neural Filters is temporarily disabled due to an error".

The filter is great, i hope in future it will work also without faces/persons.

Tanks

I've got the same issue.  I tried uninstalling the Beta Photoshop version and reinstalling and that did not work.  When it did work a few days ago, sometimes it was awesome. But sometimes it would do some funky things like changing the new color of one side of a shirt to another color on the other side.  When the lips were too dark, I would use the sponge tool to desaturate some of the color.  That helped some.  Still, I was really loving it and I do hope they work out the bugs soon!

I am experiencing all the same issues you are reporting. On the coloring issue, I find unchecking auto color gives much better results.
