Question

Photoshop CC 2014 is MUCH slower than Photoshop CC in a side-by-side comparison.

I can run them side-by-side on the same system and Photoshop CC 2014 is literally 2 times slower when selecting layers, hiding layers and moving vector points in pixel increments.

Anyone having this issue?  I'm on a 2012 Macbook Pro, 8GB of RAM running Mavericks.

Have finally discovered how to get my Toshiba P770 Win7x64 laptop with GeForce GT 540m graphics component to successfully run CC 2014 with Wacom tablet.

first, the current NVidia drivers found on the Toshiba support site didn't work for this system with CC 2014.  Apparently Toshiba posts only those drivers they've tested/approved, and after a couple years, these may be significantly outdated.

next: surprisingly, automatically updating the device from the Device Manager did not result in the most current driver -- and in fact, did not work with CC 2014 and the tablet (lagging&strange)

finally, going directly to the NVidia site, Drivers | GeForce, and selecting AUTO DETECT YOUR GPU resulted in the most current driver that WORKED with CC 2014/wacom...significantly faster and haven't experienced any problems with other applications.

additionally, to get 3D happy, after loading the driver(& of course rebooting), made a change to the NVidia Control Panel/Manage 3D settings:  added Photoshop.exe -- HIGH PERFORMANCE NVIDIA processor and made one change to the POWER MANAGEMENT MODE=>NVIDIA driver controlled (although not certain this step is necessary).

At this point, CC 2014 started working well, no lagging, no more slow downs and unexpected behavior.  Pressure Sensitivity with the Wacom pen was back but there was some strange intermittant pen behavior.  After calling Wacom Tech support, found that previous versions of the wacom drivers had left some 'baggage' in systems directories.  after removing a *tablet.dat file, it appears the tablet is now functionally as expected. (ps: noted that even after uninstalling Wacom drivers, not all Wacom Registry keys were removed).

note:  suspect there have been (or are) several issues involved with the problems with CC 2014 on my two Toshiba laptops, which over the years have had several previous versions of PS & wacom drivers installed, a bazzillons windows updates, app installs/uninstalls, and system updates -- noticed that just repeating a reboot several times resulted in different response to how drivers & programs responded.  Probably a clean Win7 install with an updated graphics driver would have made this PS update easier.

That's pretty much the first rule for dealing with any Windows problems, update your video card drivers. Nvidia and AMD both put out new drivers several times a year, and manufacturers never update their drivers in sync with the card manufacturers, if ever. They just don't bother because it's expected that you'll just get the latest drivers right from the source. The drivers will almost always be outdated even when you get a new computer that comes with a Windows preinstall from the manufacturer (which should just be erased and reinstalled with an MS Windows installation anyway to get rid of manufacturer bloatware). If you're an Nvidia user, you should install the Nvidia Experience control panel and it will alert you when new drivers are available.

I should add I am up to date with the latest Nvidia drivers and Windows updates. Earlier today I had Photoshop freeze on me when I launched it, to look at a low res JPG that was sent to me, and so I launched my task manager and couldn't see any odd disk, cpu or memory usage. In fact it looked like the computer was idling with massive overhead still available in all departments. I just launched it again while I'm typing this and again it's Not Responding.

CPU, less than 20% with Photoshop using about 14%

Memory at 55% with Photoshop using less than 300 mb (8.3 gb in use, 7.1 gb available)

Disk usage is 0% with only a few apps putting through 0.1mb/s

And now that I'm done typing this, it's still not responding, though I expect it will be in another minute or two as it was earlier.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm running OS X Mavericks, on a late 2013 Retina Macbook Pro with a Wacom tablet and experiencing the same sluggish performance. I'm using Photoshop for web design using many layers and documents typically around 1920 by +1000 pixels, and around 100-200mb. Glad Adobe is addressing this issue! Using regular PS CC for now.

Well, experiencing the same issues I have with Photoshop in Illustrator and Indesign. All since the update to CC 2014 and on a brand new Mac Pro (see specs in earlier post). Whats up Adobe doc?

I know its of little help for those experiencing slow responses from PS, but I just installed PS CC 2014 on a new 2014 mac book pro with with 8 gig of ram and its as fast as PS CC. So it does not effect machines with any kind of common thread.

Just wish we could figure out what the common denominator that is causing the slowness.

Wonder what would happen if people uninstalled PS and just ran PS CC 2014 on their machine to see if it would make a difference.

Windows has so many .dll issues that I wonder if something is not getting registered properly in the registry due to permission issues.

Is everyone logged in a "administrator" on their windows machines when ACC is installing?

Can people post screen shots of their task manager when working with PS CC and again when using PS CC 2014 as it becomes sluggish or un responsive?

It could indicate possible  process overloads which might be causing PS to be non responsive.

Some people have reported that uninstalling 14.2.1 (PS CC) then re-installing it helps performance with PS CC 2014.  Have you tried that?  I'm curious if there's a component being installed or overwritten that's causing (one of) the performance issues described above.

And yes, when the app is running slow, please check Task Manager to see how much CPU Photoshop is using and if there are other processes that could be competing with PS with heavy CPU usage.  If you want to take it a step further, activate the read I/O and write I/O columns in task manager to see if there's heavy disc access either by PS or another process when PS is performing slowly.

Serious issues, especially when uses custom brushes, I use the Wacom Intuos 5 and I can't draw anymore waiting a few seconds for my lines to appear.

Also overall Photoshop is very slow since the update, deleting layers, opening files, adding fx to text, converting to smart layers... etc etc.

    Overall issues:

    • Custom brushes, very slow
    • Deleting layers
    • Editing Smart Objects, superslow
    • Handling larger files  (100+MB)
    • Clicking certain buttons/menus, have to wait several seconds
    • Zooming in and out is incredibly slow
    • Overall... everything is much much much slower

    Specs:

    MAC PRO (new one)

    MAC OSX / 10.9.3

    Processor  3,5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5

    Memory  32 GB 1867 MHz DDR3 ECC

Video  AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB

    What can I do?!

Under preferences/advanced/graphical processor  what are your settings?

    Have you tried other settings?

Do you have the latest Wacom driver?

What is your cache level set at?  Should be at least 4

My settings arent altered from when it did work. But here it is:

All three checkboxes are checked (with advanced settings), mode is advanced.

Yes I have the latest wacom driver. Cache level is 4.

I'm also having nothing but problems since installing Photoshop CC 2014. The previous CC version worked flawlessly for me.

It's extremely slow and unresponsive, even without any documents open, or just an empty document, say 600px x 400px large.

The menus are slow and freeze when hovering or navigating the dropdowns and flyouts, the mouse cursor lags and sometimes freezes and then catches up again. The entire program sometimes freezes and becomes unresponsive for no apparent reason.

I thought it might have something to do with the GPU acceleration so I tried switching that off and restarting with no noticeable improvement. I've double checked to make sure my GPU drivers are up to date.

Keep in mind it was slow and sluggish out of the box before I changed any default settings.

    System specs are:

    Windows 8 Pro

Intel i7-3820 CPU at 3.6 GHz

    16 GB 2400 MHz RAM

    question for Brad:

what tablet services are running?  think on win8, there might be a couple -- at least Tablet PC Input Serice ...  win8 installs them automatically

might try stopping them to test ...

    Known Participant

Hey Eliz. The Tablet Input Service is stopped and not running. I don't think it runs if compatible hardware isn't present. Don't see any other obvious culprits running. Keep in mind this is the exact same machine as I was running the last version of CC on until last week.

Thanks for giving me some ideas though!

    Cheers.

For anyone who has the problem, could you please check to see if it's reproducible with a new action I've created?  If it is, then we have an easy, repeatable way to a) test to see if the problem exists on a particular system, and b) verify the fix once a solution is found.

Download and run this action on both Photoshop CC 14.x and Photoshop CC (2014) and measure the time it takes to run (to the nearest second is fine).  Watch the little > (play) button to go off to determine when it's done.

    http://Noel.ProDigitalSoftware.com/temp/CC_Testing.zip

If you have been experiencing the CC (2014) slowdown identified in this thread, specifically I want to know if this action faithfully reproduces much slower times to run with the new version vs. the older one.

NOTE:  Select the very first "Soft Round" brush in your presets list before running this action.

I hope they get it fixed even though I don't notice the slowdown your referring to. The only time I see a speed dip is when I load a file from my data drive which is a 1.5 tb hdd. let me try with the file the gentleman above posted. I'm curious.

I understand you're currently looking for Windows issues, but posting my experience here, as the original question was from an OS X Mavericks user.

I'm working in fairly large PSDs, with file sizes of 150MB or more, at mobile device dimensions (like an extended canvas of a screen, e.g. 640x2500, or an iPad Retina display at 2048x1536), with hundreds of layers and dozens of folders. There are many, many text layers. PS CC 2014 will hang on virtually every command. Selecting or hiding/revealing a layer or folder, scrolling across the canvas, an even opening a menu will pause the app on 5 seconds of spinning beach ball. Virtually unusable. The previous version didn't exhibit this issue.

Nothing really tweaked here... behaviors haven't changed since last build. No plug-ins or other background processes. Tried disabling Font Preview Size to no avail. I don't use the Info Panel, Generator isn't running, and I'm not working in 3D. Something clearly went haywire on this build.

Again, we know about the problem with a lot of text layers. It is already being worked on.

Info Palette is not visible and generator is enabled.  I did disable generator from the preferences panel and restart Photoshop, but it doesn't seem to have made a difference.

In experimenting, it appears that the biggest problem occurs when creating a new document.  I tried opening an existing JPG and things seemed to move quite a bit faster.  Not sure if that has to do with turning off Generator or not.

Any anti-virus software running?  Also, does performance get better if the info palette is hidden?
