Question

Photoshop will not open

Simply went to open Photoshop.  Intro screen came up and little blue wheel was spinning but then it just stopped, no messages, etc.  Went through various potential solutions on Adobe and on the internet.  Nothing worked. Finally uninstalled and reinstalled through Creative Cloud.  Had put it in “Run as Administrator” in trying to solve the problem.  Changed that and Photoshop ran once.  When attempting to reopen it again, it would not run.  Lightroom works.  The Beta version of PS works.

I had same issues different versions of photoshop, none of them working, window opened and started to load an then nothing…. tried first all the reset, reinstalling and other stuff, and finally it was simply my nvidia driver that needed to be updated, installed the latest driver of nvidia studio driver and now it works fine again.

I dont really understand why a driver, a stable version of phoshop, with no changes at all stopped working, why did my graphic card or photoshop needed a new driver to make it work while it was working fine yesterday...but anyway update nvidia studio driver worked for me.

I feel your pain and I’m equally irritated. Nothing works. Drivers? Nope. Running as an administrator? Nope. Firewall? Nope. Settings? Nope. And now there is no error reporting either. It suggested  OpenCLOn12.dll problem earlier but after reinstalling it’s just pure magic. And it worked perfectly yesterday.

Try resetting Photoshop’s preferences and make sure your GPU drivers are up to date. If it still won’t open, launching Photoshop while holding Ctrl + Alt + Shift can help reset the settings.

Not exactly certain where you get the Ctrl + Alt + Shift approach.  All that does is bring up the PS properties panel for a shortcut.

I just tried this and while it didn’t work for me it did come up with a window “ Do You want to allow this app to make change to your device. Adobe Photoshop 2023….” umm I have PS 2026 don’t I or is newest version still 2023?

Photoshop auto updated on me 1 day ago and now does not open. I use it daily and need it for work…. Unistalled and reinstalled and same issue. ADOBE???? V27.9.1 was working yesterday.

Update, rolled back a version and still not opening. Restarted system and have not installed anything new other than the creative cloud suite that updated yeaterday.

I’m now currently unistalling evereything Adobe. Then I’m going to only install the previous version of Photoshop that was working yesterday.

I’m desperate Have work for client due now.

Unfortunetly that didn’t work. I’m out of options. 😓

Feel your pain.  In my view, you can thank Adobe.  The idea that no error reporting takes place in cases like this is ridiculous.

If more than one person is getting around the issue by starting Photoshop without plugins and extensions, then there is a good chance they both/all have the same errant plugin installed.  At least one of you needs to post a screen shot of your installed plugins so the others can confirm commonality.  When you find it, there’s a good chance the author will be aware of the issue and has information on the plugin’s web page.

It might take a bit of back and forth because the plugins can be in groups and can’t all be twirled open at the same time, but you’ll get there.

There is a Plugin troubleshooting guide

    Photoshop plug-ins troubleshooting | Photoshop

The help page suggests disabling GPU acceleration, but I am not so sure how relevant that would be as the plugin will likely not get its settings from Photoshop Preferences.

You also need to state the Photoshop version. v27.9.1 is the current Release version as I type this, but might not be by the time some people read the thread.

Also state your OS platform and version.

Thanks for the response.  It is PS v27.9.1 that has failed.  The OS is Win 11 Pro with latest updates running on an i9 with 128Gb memory.  A couple of problems with the approach however.  First, PS was working (for me) two days ago with all the same plugins.  Second, yesterday PS magically started.  I did some editing, opened and closed it a few times.  Thought the issue was resolved.  Got up this morning and attempted to start it to the same issue.  Splash screen displays until “measuring memory” scrolls and then disappears.  Also, I attempted starting PS without plugins by pressing “shift”.  Same problem exists with no plugins.  I will look at the link but based on the aforementioned seems likely it is not a plug in problem.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: My PS v279.1 quit while trying to load brushes. I re-started PS loading a blank document with no plug-ins, add-ons, etc. After that I closed PS and opened like normal and it’s been working. Process is this:

Hold Shift (Windows) or Option (Mac) while launching to open a new, empty preferences file.

Thanks for the suggestion but tried that early on.  Clearly, based on your comment and others found on Adobe and other sites, the current rendition of PS is not exactly what I would call stable.  Compounding the problem is Adobe’s determination not to provide any insight for users when a major error occurs.  This concept of reinstalling and guessing/working through a myriad of potential problems is absolutely ridiculous.  I can’t think of a single piece of software in recent memory (last 10 years or so, have been working with desktop technology since mid ‘80s) that consistently has these types of problems.  And this is not a first.  Have faced similar failures with PS numerous times over the last 3 years.

Same problem here, and unfortunately no solution to offer. I am having the same symptoms as the OP, and they started yesterday. I already went through recommended steps up to the point of reinstalling all apps after refreshing CC with Adobe’s cleaner tool. Thankfully PS Beta is working for the moment. I will note that I am also using an RTX 4060 ti card. I updated the Studio driver from a June or July version to the latest as part of my troubleshooting. It had no effect, so it doesn’t look to me like the video driver is an issue.

Sounds as if our problems and approaches thus far are very similar in that 1. PS beta is still working for me as well.  Even after an update this morning.  2. I am running a RTX 4060 Ti as well.  Have tried both studio and game drivers.  Makes no difference on the PS start up behavior to date.  Something interesting did occur in that yesterday PS actually did open and close multiple times.  Thought the issue had magically resolved.  Unfortunately, went to open it this morning and had the same problem.  Seems odd to me so many love to look to blame anything except how PS is actually programmed and implemented.

I had a very similar issue with Photoshop not opening, and it’s frustrating when reinstalling doesn’t fix it. Since Lightroom and the Beta version are working, it sounds like something specific to the main Photoshop installation or its settings. I’d also try resetting Photoshop preferences and checking whether any recent Creative Cloud or Windows update caused the issue. Hopefully you can get it running again without another reinstall.

Thanks for the suggestion but I did reset the preferences.  Did not resolve the issue.

As a follow up to the original post, uninstalled and reinstalled using the “Cloud Cleaner” tool.  Photoshop would opened once.  I could open and edit an image but when I attempted to open the program again, same failure...splash screen, blue screen then nothing.  I saw this same behavior characterized in another question herein.  Obviously, something weird going on in Photoshop.  Do not see how anything in the OS could change from closing and reopening a program.  Need insights into how to determine what is happening.

Not certain how much detail can be provided for software that does not start.  Running the latest version of Photoshop, Creative Cloud states that it is 27.9.1.  When attempting to start Photoshop the “splash” screen comes up and a little blue will spins for a second or two.  Then everything disappears and the program does not start.  Nothing on the system changed to my knowledge.  Of course, one can never say for sure since it seems Adobe and Microsoft are on the system more than I am.  That aside, I just went to start the program and it would not run.

Curious is Lightroom classic runs as will Adobe Photoshop beta (27.11).  It was installed two days ago.  Also noticed that under Recent updates Photoshop is missing from my list of apps.  Previously, I thought it was listed with the date of the last update.  Have tried pretty much every troubleshooting approach offered on Adobe or the internet.  Clearly, this is not an uncommon problem that Adobe refuses to do anything about.

System details are Windows 11 Pro build 26200.  i9-14900k @ 3200MHz.  128Gb Ram.  NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti graphics.

Appreciate any ideas that might actually work.  Figuring if total reinstalls are what is required every six months out of a program need to find another program.  The Adobe approach to programming reminds me of Windows 98 days from back in the mid to late ‘90s in that one can count on have to do a total reconfiguration on a regular basis.
