Print Presets Won't Save on Mac in Photoshop or Lightroom

I have been having this problem for a few months. I am using Mac OS Ventura 13.2.1 and Photoshop 2023 or Lightroom Classic. I have long used presets but now, after I save one, when I come back to it the next time, the saved preset does not retain any of the settings. I tried uninstalling Photoshop 2023, rebooting, then re-install Photoshop 2023. The presets still don't retain settings.

I've also tried deleting my P5000 printer from the system settings, and then re-installing my Epson driver. Again, doesn't fix the problem.

I also tried printing from Safari and made a preset in Safari and this one does work as it is supposed to. If I then switch back to Photoshop, the preset created while in Safari works properly in Photoshop. I tried one more time to create a preset while in Photoshop, but it still will not work.

Hi @evanNow hold the space bar down when going to File/Print - that will reset just the print dialog box instead of the entire program, does this solve the issue?

Glad to see someone else having this problem though the fact this dates back to 2023 is not great, I'm now running PS 2025 on MacOS Sonoma and the print presets no longer work.  Although listed as a print preset they don't save settings and default back which makes them completely useless. Can't see how this is an Apple or Epson issue as it's clearly a glitch in Adobe and has been an issue since at least 2023.  Would be nice to get a fix from Adobe rather than a workaround.

Holding space bar down didn't work for me, anybody else found a workaround or has print presets working correctly?

The only half reliable workaround I've found is to use Apple Preview to create the presets, then refer to them when printing from Adobe. That isn't 100% either though, some parameters get lost, so be careful. I think there may be a way to edit the presets manually in a text editor to fix that, but I haven't tried that yet.

This may be an Adobe issue, or it may be an Apple issue - it's hard to say from the evidence. It's true that all Adobe apps have the same issue, but the fact that it isn't fixed after all this time suggests to me there is an underlying issue with how the Adobe and Apple products work together.

Someone, somewhere will know exactly what the problem is, and the fact there is silence on the topic from Apple and Adobe points to there being a difficulty which may be technical or possibly commercial.

Meanwhile their global user base are deprived of basic functionality they need to do their work.
I just recently moved from Windows to Mac, and I'm genuinely shocked by some of the basic bread and butter stuff that doesn't work, considering how expensive the kit is.

Windows doesn't have these issues, but I'm in too deep now, need to make it work somehow.

I am glad to finally find this thread about this problem.   It is not isolated to Epson, I have the same problem with my Canon Pro-300 (Printing from LR 13.1 on a Mac / Sonoma 14.2.1 / M1 chip Mac Studio)

-  I tried the holding spacebar while going to File>Print without success.  Holding the spacebar makes it difficult to even select the File>Print menu option as it keeps entering repeating spaces!  Is there some trick to this?

-  I tried the suggested workaround by going to Apple Preview and setting a print preset there, and it doesn't work - the settings aren't saved when bringing up that preset in LR.

- Full Disk Access is enabled for LR and PS

It is quite annoying that this feature does not work.   For each and every print, I need to go back through all the settings and reset the options previously used.   For example, if I select Matte Photo Paper, the driver will reset back to Photo Paper Pro Platinum every single time - causing a profile / paper mismatch obviously.

I have found that if I don't save a preset, print and save the file. The settings I used remain. This is on a M2 Mac, with an Epson large format, using InDesign.

Now if I attempt to save a pre-set it will revert back to default settings! Which are Lustre Paper, Color Management On! This will override your custom Color profile and distort the colors on all your prints.

It took me weeks to work this out and a lot of wasted prints! The biggest mistake was not noticing Color Management in the print dialogue box switching on!

Not saving any presets has saved me! I would save it's the same printing with Photoshop.!

By the way I tried every advice in this thread from saving in Preview, printing with Preview, printing with the "unsupported" Epson layout tool. Even printing from Photoshop. None of those worked!  The Epson Layout tool was the only one where the Color was correct, but as for layouts, it's not the same as using InDesign!

I have contacted Epson, Apple and Adobe many times and they have no idea! Each person I spoke to blamed another company. Pass the parcel!

Hi. I think this is an Adobe issue. I have M2 Mac running Sonoma and the latest version of PS and LR and I am seeing the same issues using a Canon Pro 1000!. Like everyone else, suffering wasted prints. Hoping someone from Adobe can take a deep dive and come up with a fix in the next version.

@Brendan D Rowlands The print preset is saved by the Printer manufacturer's driver software, not Photoshop etc. how this saving fails in some apps but not others is a mystery. It does seem to be a MacOS issue.

There's a workaround - go to print from the Apple Preview app. save a setting there, apparently, I have been assured, that preset will stick and be usable in Photoshop etc.

I hope this helps

Thank you @NB, colourmanagement for this work around. Hopefully this will get fixed at some point by Adobe and Apple along with a few other glitches. I have heard the new OS Sonoma 14.2 has affected the import of images from cards and tethering in LR. Not sure how much faith to put into this rumour but for now not upgrading until this has been resolved or get information to contra.

All the best, Brendan

If you have an Epson printer. Would strongly suggest Epsona Print Layout.  Excellent.

Epson print layout isn't good if you want to print an exact size and many different images. Tried it with issues with margins.

I've been facing this issue for quite a while now, and ever since the macOS version after Monterey, I haven't been able to save preset data correctly. I contacted Apple twice about it, but with no success. When printing regular documents, such as Pages or Numbers, the data is saved correctly. However, in Photoshop, I've consistently been unable to save the data. I recall this issue arising when the system settings interface changed to a design similar to that of the iPad. Surprisingly, even with numerous upgrades to Photoshop, the problem persists. It seems like Adobe, being such a large company, might not prioritize output files. It's quite laughable that such a big company hasn't resolved this issue in over a year.

The best thing to do is not save a preset and see if your settings remain the same. It seems to work for me. But it does revert back to default settings every so often. I need to check every time I print.

I have setup a new M2 Studio Mac. I print directly from InDesign and have exactly the same issue! My old iMac had no such problem for 10 years! None of the printer presets hold any recollection at all, and they are reset to the same default. I saved presets for Canvas and Matte Photo paper. If I select my presets for my paper type it automatically defaults to Lustre Paper! Tried everything from reinstalling drivers and InDesign. I have also tried making presets from Photoshop and same same! The only way I'm able to print is to just leave it on default and manually check each time for the paper profile. If not my Color profile and paper type distorts the colours badly! Very annoying. Tried calling Adobe, Apple and Epson and not one person has any clue. Wasted two weeks and many sheets making colour profiles. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this issue! I will try resetting the printing system, or holding the space bar, if that actually works next time!

I solved the problem: try Epson Print Layout. Excellent driver/app with PS and LR plug-ins. No more problems!

Thanks I will try it out to see if it works. My printer is an Epson SC P8070 and I generally like to print from InDesign because that's how I layout my photos. I have never had any issues before. I would probably have to export everything as PDFs to use that, which is more time wasted. With InDesign I can drop and change photos on the fly to print.

Hi @CShubert Thanks for the reply. This worked! I have saved a couple of presets from Photoshop after doing this and it worked. I was losing hope so thank you.

Cory, are you ready for this?  I really didn't want to reverse the PS app as you suggested, so I just decided to print directly from LR Classic.  Guess what...the EXACT SAME  issue!  None of the printer presets hold any recollection at all, and they are reset to the same defaults that I saw in PS....???  Thank you!   David

This is (mostly) a Ventura bug and has been an issue from day one with presets (at least Epson), especially the ColorSync settings used differently in Adobe products than most others (to gray out the radio button with Application Manages Color). Sometimes it works; sometimes, it doesn't. Apple should be aware of this.

FWIW, in Lightroom Classic, you never want to use any such presets; the template stores all this for you. With Ventura, you still need to double-check everything is set correctly before hitting "Print"!

When you say "in Lightroom Classic, you never want to use any such presets; the template stores all this for you," how do you get things like Media Type, Output Resolution and checking High Speed (items in Print Settings) into the Lightroom template?

In the Print dialog, the Presets pop-up menu has to have something selected. Do you select "Default Settings"? Will the Lightroom template override the default settings?

Hi Cory,

It worked!!!!

I had been struggling with the exactly same issue as evanNow has but with different printers (9900 and  P9570) until I saw these conversations.

Your suggestion just blew away my stress and fraustration.

I really appreciate it.

Hope and believe it helps a lot to others having the same issues.

You saved my day!
