“Remove background” no longer works

Hello,
Few alternate methods you could try that are somewhat fast if the tools being weird

Magic eraser tool instead, bit finnicky if colours are blended softly
Use the object selection tool, and click and drag around the areas you want, and antyhing it fails to grab, then use the slection brush tool to finish the mask shape you want
If its a flat background, try the colour range tool under select - colour range. pick the colour you want and play with the slider to allow for nearby colours to also be grabbed, then itll give you the mask which you can just hit delete to get rid of it.

Personally i stopped using the background removal tool a long time ago as its not the most consistent even when working, same for the magic eraser. Much better off spending 60 seconds making a selection mask instead.

What file type is the image you're working with? 

Is it an 8-bit RGB file?

Thanks for reaching out. Could you let us know which version of Photoshop you're using, and whether this happens with every image or just specific ones? As a first step, I’d suggest resetting your Photoshop preferences to see if that helps. If the issue continues, it would be super helpful to take a look at your System Info. You can find it by going to Help > System Info in Photoshop. Just copy it into a text file and attach it here, or feel free to share it through Google Drive, WeTransfer, or any file-sharing service you prefer.
