Smart object gray layer at top of file causes blocks when working

(related to this post>> https://community.adobe.com/t5/photoshop-ecosystem-bugs/smart-object-gray-layer-at-top-of-file-causes-blocks-when-working/idi-p/14787126)

Hoping for updates made in my previous post (made with my work account from prior job)...

Working in high end commercial photo retouching most--if not all--of my files have grain applied to the image using a 50% gray layer converted to a smart object with noise and blur smart filters.

Very frequently I will be working on the lower layers with the grain layer on and as I clone, heal, brush, etc blocks of pixels of everything below the grain basically disappear and reveal the gray grain information instead. It corrects itself the moment I turn off/on that or any layer.

This is obviously very annoying. My workaround is to work with the grain layer off which is almost as annoying, almost counterproductive.

This has been going on for a few years now on (I believe) every version of PS on various suped up Mac machines intended for high end, high volume commercial post production work.

Hopefully before new Hue/Saturation shortcuts or updates to Action interfaces are added to the program again, this can be resolved 🤞

Thanks for the reply!

I will share screenshots the next time it happens.

That workaround is fine for a temporary (while working) fix but the quality of pattern is not really good as it's just a repeated square of information where edges would be visible when closely analyzed.

Could you please post screenshots taken at View > 100% with the pertinent Panels (Toolbar, Layers, Options Bar, …) visible?

Why don’t you use a Pattern Layer (set to the appropriate Blend Mode) instead of the Smart Object?

Obviously that will not let you adjust the size and blurring of the neutral noise the same way but after setting up a few custom Patterns to chose from one can often achieve a decent result.

And one can avoid the risk of cut-offs when the extending the Canvas.
