In short, the organizer can manage your photo/video files on internal or external drives, but also on 'removable' media like CD, DVD, USB sticks or card readers.

External USB drives are managed exactly like internal drives, but the other categories have special options at 'Import' (downloading) time.

How does it work for your catalog?

For external media like card readers or cameras and also CD/DVDs, by default, you are supposed to want to copy their contents on your computer and to manage them in your catalogs.

In the options in the bottom of the dialog, you uncheck 'copy files on import' and you check 'generate preview". The size of the previews can be set in your preferences.

Instead of working with very small 'thumbnails' in the catalog to manage the image visually, you have medium sized copies which make organizing easy even if the CD/DVD is not present.  I think you should consider that option if you have many CDs to manage.
