Question

Distortion When Using Sinhala Fonts IN PSE

If I wish to type in Sinhala using Photoshop Elements I always get an incorrect display or distortion. (I also get the same problem in CorelDraw.) The fonts only display correctly  in a word processor.

So the only work around is to take a screenshot from Microsoft Word, then paste into a graphics software, trace to a vector and export as a png with transparency to use in PS Elements. I find this very inconvenient.

Is there a way to make Sinhala (or maybe other Asian fonts) display correctly. Your advice would be appreciated.

Kind regards

Chris

Example: Correct text on top. Distorted below.

It looks like from the screenshot of the actual text done in Photoshop Elements that Anti-aliasing is not enabled

in the Type options.

Thanks Jeff. I can confirm that Anti-aliasing is enabled. Maybe the magnification is making the edges look jagged. Disabling the Anti-aliasing makes them look much worse.

Kind regards

Two things:

1.  When viewing fonts always view at 100% in pse, no more, no less.

2.

From a post from 3 years ago...
"Most of the Sinhala Fonts Users do not buy the Fonts from the owners/Designers. Most of Sinhala Fonts are pirated. If you purchase FM and ISI Sinhala afonts from the Real Owner you will get correct guidelines and some software solutions to use it in the right way. Dont download pirated fonts from websites who distribute free."

Glenn 8675309, thank you for your reply and advice.

I have tried viewing at 100% but the distortion is still there.  My preferred Sinhala font is Iskoola Pota which comes with Windows 10. It displays fine in Microsoft Word, but is distorted in PSE. I suspect that the problem is that Sinhala fonts are not supported in PSE, although they may be supported in other Adobe products with the correct settings.

Adobe do make some Sinhala fonts which might help.  I have no idea how to download them. Maybe they are only available  to CC users and not to PSE users.

I would be interested to learn if anyone has succeeded in typing in Sinhala using PS Elements.

Kind regards

Update!

I found a solution from the above link. Evidently Sinhala Unicode fonts (Iskoola Pota) are not compatible with PSE but FM fonts are.  Its possible to type in unicode in a word processor and paste into an online Unicode to FM font converter, then paste into PSE and change to the FMMalathi font. The characters then display correctly.

What version of Photoshop Elements and version of Windows are you using?

Are you using a specific font that exhibits the issue?

Thank you for your reply.

I am using windows 10 64 bit.

As far as I am aware, this problem occurs with all versions of PS Elements. In particular,I have tested with PSE 9 PSE 2020 and PSE 2024.

I have tried using the Iskoola Potta Font which is the most common Sinhala font and native to Win 10. Other Sinhala fonts experience the same problem. Word processors display just fine.

I am not sure if Adobe make a Sinhala font tbat will work in PSE. As long as the characters display correctly, I am not too fussy about the font.

Kind regards
Chris

I did find this link which may somehow be related to the problem. Unfortunately there is no way to change the Asion Text track settings in  PSE 2024  or earlier.

Another possible work around might be to print a word file to pdf, then import the pdf into PSE which will appear as a bitmap with a transparent background. Some quality will be lost though.

Hopefully, the developers can fix the font problem in the future.

Kind regards

Chris
