Question

Lasso tool won't feather after update

I updated to Elements 2026 and now when I use the lasso tool it won't feather, no matter what the feather number is set to. I tried resetting the tool. Anti-aliasing box is checked. I don't want to have to go into "refine edge" every time I want to feather my selection. How can I fix this?

@johnp5888287, if you have not changed the update settings, the update should install automatically.  The update was rolled out to different regions over the past week.  It is my understanding that all users should now have the update.

I've installed the update using your method of unintstalling then redownloading.   The slider tool still does not work for me- I have to use  the refine edge options as before.

Having your image in indexed color can affect this (from what I've found online.)

I have tried it in 2025, 2024, 2020 and 2014--- the slider dosn't do anything when using any of the selection tools/ options-   With all of those versions you have to use the feather / refine edges options.

I rarely use the feather slider

Something I figured out:   You set the slider then draw your selection.   That seems a bit idiotic to me.

Hi all, the fix for this issue is now available in the latest update of Adobe Photoshop Elements 2026. Please update to the latest build to get this working.

Great, but I can't find an update process, only the purchase of a whole new program.

pauld91076084,

What version of Photoshop Elements and operating system are you using?

Can you describe what is not working with Refine Edge.

From my experience, Refine Edge doesn't work either.

Refine edge is working for me, but I'm very much regretting getting this upgrade.

Hi @elizabethg44485247,

Thanks for reporting this issue. It is already on our radar, and the team is currently investigating this.

For now, using the feathering option in Select Menu > Feature and Select Menu > Refine Edge can help unblock you.

Regards,

Medha

I guess I'll just hope there's an update soon that fixes everything. Cropping is also a hastle. It works, but it lags so it's frustrating.

@johnp5888287 , it doesn't work like that. Adobe will not tell me if a fix is in the works. A number of bugs have been reported so far. I would expect that some of them will be resolved in an update to the program. In the meantime, I suggest you use the solution posted by @99jon. IOW, use the selection menu for feathering.

I have exactly the same problem and it's creating a major problem for me. Did you ever get a response from Adobe?

@99jon , does the feather slider work for you?

No it's a bug. Thanks for reporting it Greg. I've also reported the bug with camera raw profiles.

Make your selection and when you see the marching ants go to the top menu.

Choose Select > Feather then entre a number of pixels and press OK

Press Ctrl+J to place the selection on a separate layer

Click off the eyeball on the background layer to see the selection and feathering
