Photoshop Elements 2023 "JPEG marker segment length is too short" error

This message appears when trying to open all online files (eg Dropbox jpeg files) on newly installed Photoshop Elements 2023.

"Could not complete your request because a JPEG marker segment length is too short (the file may be truncated or incomplete) "

I can however open files local files (eg Download and photos folders on Macbook Air M2). If you copy and paste online JPEG's into a local directory you can then open them but a right hassle if you cannot open them directly with Photoshop Elements.

It's a know problem with jpegs gathered from Web apps (like Whatsapp...)

The reason is that those apps are using not standard proprietary metadata which are rejected by Adobe apps. The solution is to use alternative editors which don't care about metadata orthodoxy. You just open and save those files, the problem metadata fields will be ignored.

I also think that such jpeg files can be directly opened in the ACR module of Elements. I can't test it now because I no longer have a sample of such corrupt jpegs.

Dropbox is pretty mainstream for storage. Surely Adobe should have an answer to this for paid software??

Dropbox does not edit files nor their medata, it just stores them? Never had a problem with Dropbox, nor pictures directly out of camera or scan. If you store or sync a similar corrupt file on Dropbox, what will you get?

Web apps do take the liberty to add proprietary tags for their own management;  I can't comment on the standards, I only know what is/are the usual workaround(s)
