Transferring Organizer File from Photoshop Elements Org 7 to Organizer 2024 - CRASHES EVERYTIME

I am trying to transfer my organizer file from one computer to another. My new computer would not support my old orgnaizer program so I updated to 2024. The program crashes everytime I try to restore the file. I run a small business from home and I can't get up and running till this is fixed. PLEASE HELP!

Don't know if this will help, but four years ago I had great trouble transferring the organiser, with repeated crashes. Eventually I realised that I had Google Chrome open while I was trying, and as soon as I closed it down the Organiser let me do the transfer.

You should contact Adobe Support.  The fact that your catalog converted properly on your old machine suggests that there is nothing wrong with the catalog.  At this point, I can only suggest that you completely uninstall Elements 2024 on your new machine and also use the Creative Cloud Cleaner tool to remove all traces of the program from your machine.  Then reinstall the program.

The Cleaner tool can be a little intimidating, but take a look at my post here which will hopefully guide you through the process.

Added:  When reinstalling, temporarily turn off any anti-virus or firewall software that you may be using.

No problem.  Yes, all tags will be maintained.

So I did this last method -- I get this error "The catalog could not be opened.  An internal programming error occured."

I also backed up from the 2024 elements on my old computer and tried to restor in Elements 2024 on the new computer and it crashed.

Any help???

Your folder structure is your folder structure.  The catalog merely keeps track of where your photos are stored on your computer.  If you have reproduced your file structure on your new computer, as you say you have, the catalog will find the files in the same place on your new computer.

OK!  I think I actaully meant keywords and tags!

If you were able to convert the catalog on the old computer, simply copy the catalog folder to the new machine.  You can find the folder location under the Organizer's Help>System Info dialog.  You can place the folder anywhere but the default location is C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\

Once you have copied the catalog folder to the new computer, double-click on the catalog.pse24db file and the catalog should open.

Will doing it this way keep the folder structure, etc?

@gwenm30114861 said:  When I did the first backup on Elements 7 -- I did get this notification:

The CD device driver is not installed. Please reinstall Adobe Photoshop Elements.

It's not clear to me whether you are talking about backing up on the old computer or the new computer.  Have you installed Elements 7 on the new computer?

My new computer will not accept Elements 7 -- when I tried to insitall it, it totally crashed the windows system and we had to Restore to Factory settings restart.  Lost everyting.

This is why I updgraded to 2024 ---

Update -- I installed 2024 organnizer on my old computer and it imported my catalog perfectly fine.  Why won't it import the catalog on the new computer?  It keeps crashing the program.

Is your photo file folder hierarchy exactly the same on the new and old computers?

What options have you used to restore the catalog?

Do you have more than one backup available?

Yes -- I transfered the folder from one computer to another using a transfer cord.  I have not moved, deleted or changed any items in it.

I have only used the restore catalog

- from hard drive

- to hard drive.

When I try it the Organizer crashes almost immediatly.

I have an old back up from 2 years ago ... but I really don't want to use that as it's mising a quite a bit!

@gwenm30114861, what are the specs of your new computer.  In particular, how much RAM does your new machine have?  And do you have more than one hard drive?  If possible, copy the backup to an external drive (or a second internal hard drive) and try the Restore from there.

Did you copy your photo/video files over to the new machine before performing the restore?

When you first launched the Organizer, did you import any photos into the new catalog?

Thanks for sticking with me!   I am running Windows and have always had Windows.  No Mac here.

My new specs : 64.0 GB (63.7 GB usable)  : Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-14900HX 2.20 GHz  : Windows 11 Home

There is 1 hard drive on the machine.

I did copy my files over before doing the restore and I did not import any photos to the new catalog.    I also created a new catalog just to be sure their wasn't something wrong with the 1st one and it still does not work.

I'm not sure I have an external hard drive around here, but I'll see.  If not, any other thoughts.  I have moved my catalog from computer to computer many times and have never had an issue... till this upgrade!

@Glenn 8675309, there was no Elements 7 for Mac.  In the early days, I think Mac versions usually skipped an update.

"My new computer would not support my old orgnaizer program so I updated to 2024"-- Sound like you now have a MAC running ventura-  If that is the case You are probably out of luck.  Notice I said probably.

This may help:
