Audio Cutting out

I'm new to Adobe and having some trouble. I just upgraded to a larger Mac desktop and I had been working on a Mac laptop before without problems. It seems like if my video clip has the fx box showing up on it, the audio tracks will all cut out. The audio is normal for the clips that don't have "fx" on them. The video is shot on iPhone and the audio is mp3 and a voice-over recorded on the Mac desktop. I've tried a lot anything else I can do?

iphone footage is usually variable frame rate which Premiere has problems with and the symptoms are hard to predict.

use mediainfo to determine whether your source is variable or constant frame rate
    https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo/Download
if it's variable use handbrake to convert to constant frame rate
    https://handbrake.fr
and here's a tutorial on how to use handbrake
