Black screen during Red footage playback

When playing back Red footage, specifically in a proxy workflow, premiere pro program window goes black while audio continues to play fine.  This has been happening since PP 24.  To fix, in the past, I would switch to the software renderer and that would return video image.  Now, I have to restart PP and either switch that on in startup or continue to work until it fails again.

 

I am on windows 10

5950 AMD CPU

Nvidia 3090 GPU
All drivers up to date

64 GB ram

Footage is on a samsung SSD

PP updated to 25.3 but as mentioned, has been occuring since 24

 

The footage will playback fine and then it won't and I only seem to having issues with Red footage in this manner.  Expected result is continally fine playback with no video dropouts.

I have the same problem : R3D footage (but no proxies), black screen every 2min, sound still playing, AMD CPU and NVIDIA GPU.
So very comparable situation.

Experienced the same situation with PP26 and PP25 but no problem with PP23.

In details :
I started editing with PP26 for a week without problem on a multiple interviews. Then suddenly, the screen get black when I started added B-Rolls (all R3D clips). Since that, what ever I do, every 2min the screen get black. Even if it just playing clip in the source monitor, all timelines closed.

What I tried : 

  • Update PP26 to 26.0.1
  • Update NVIDIA driver from 581.** Studio to 591.74 Studio
  • HAGS was and are still disabled
  • restart PP26 multiple time
  • restart my PC a multiple time
  • try PP25 (same problem)
  • try PP23 (no problem :) )
  • import again the project into a new fresh project
  • just start a new project (PP26 and PP25)
  • import XML from the project (PP26 and PP25)
  • try rendering with mercury software only, but not available in PP26.
  • try to give up PP26 and import XML in PP23, but the duplicates clips in PP23 and the non-working/never-worked “consolidate duplicates” forced me to give-up definitively PP23.


So I don’t know what to do …

My set-up :
Windows 10
AMD Ryzen 9 3900x
Nvidia 2080 Ti
64 GB ram
Footage on SSD
PP 26.0.1 but same problem with PP 25.6.4

Hi @Jeremiah25431112dejz - It is odd that the color space is set to 601 and your red files are 4K? also, your proxy frame size is at an odd resolution for your OCF media at 1024x682, something very odd with the setup is happening.

You typically don’t need proxy files with RED source footage, because RED’s raw format is resolution independent and performance can be adjusted by changing the playback resolution (e.g., 1/2, 1/4) which functions similarly to using proxies.

Another tidbit to add as well, other people have been doing work on this on Macs and have not reported any issues, so it seems to be my pc related if not my machine/ setup (though everything else I've worked on has not had this issue).

thanks @jamieclarke .  i wasn't there when the proxies were created (project of the series was handed off to me) however I believe it was done through premiere by right clicking/ proxy/ create proxy/ custom size and pro res QT selected.  Attached is a screen shot of the properties.  When i start the project back up again tomorrow, I'll reset the prefs and cache.  As I said, this has now crossed from 24 to 25 so for whatever reason it is persistent.  Appreciate the help!

Hi @Jeremiah25431112dejz - Can you list the steps to creating your proxies?  Do you have the black screen with the proxies enabled or the raw red footage?  Can you right click on one of your clips and select "Media File Properties", then post a screenshot.

 

Can you try and hold down "SHIFT" while launching Premiere and check the boxes
"Reset app preferences" (Backup Preferences first)
"Clear media cache files"
"Reset plugin loading cache"

thanks for the assistance!  I do have 3rd party plugins installed however I am not using the panel for them.  They are the film impact series.

 

I just switched over to the game ready drivers to test and had the same outcome so switched back to studio and am using version 576.8 released on 6/17/25

 

I haven't noticed this with any other codecs (unlike other posts I've seen), just these red and red proxies (which were generated through Adobe so they are pro res proxy 422 files).

Do you have any third party plugins or panels installed?

What GPU driver version are you using?
