Question

Export of repositioned captions not working

I have a mp4 and a SRT caption file. I bring them both into Premiere and edit the caption positioning in a few places where text already appears at the bottom of the video.

I then export the video as the same file type and include exporting a SRT sidecar file. When I view the resulting video, the caption repositioning is not there.

I saw some other posts that alluded to the fact that caption position won't export, is that correct? Then why offer it if it can't be exported.

Any help is appreciated.

Jenn,

The many styling options for the Subtitle format for caption is because they are designed to be burned in. But this creates a major limitation, since on line playback will support a variety of styles in sidecar formats. On the other hand, on line players often recommend sidecar files that are closed caption formats (even if they are not using them as embedded captions). So the workaround, change the file type to one that will export a sidecar with positioning information, is not as bad as it first appears.

When I discovered that .stl export of a Subtitle track had been dropped, I posted it as a bug report in the Beta forum:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-beta-discussions/stl-export-no-longer-available-with-subtitle-caption-track/td-p/12646624

No responses.

Note that the basic specifications of .srt does NOT include positioning. But such codes can be added to the file and may be used by some players.

In a related thread the other day, I confirmed the limitations of srt export, and recommended the workaround mentioned above:
