FIXED issue: Text-Based Editing - clips reset to first frame after relink in 23.4

This issue has been fixed in 23.5 which is now available.  Please update to get the fix.

We are aware of an issue in Premiere Pro version 23.4: when transcribed clips in a timeline are taken offline and relinked, clips shift and reset to the first frame. Effects, transitions, and speed changes can also be removed or impacted.  Our engineers understand the problem well, and we are testing fixes internally right now.  We have put a fix into Public Beta and will get the fix into an official release ASAP.  I will update this post with more details as soon as I learn them.

If you are experiencing this problem:

If you get the media relinking dialog in 23.4 and you have previously used transcription, close and do not save the project. Make a backup of your project file just to be safe.

Workaround #1 – Restore media

  1. Put the media back in its original location so no relinking is required.

* There are many cases where this is not possible; try one of the following:

Workaround #2 – Beta

  1. Download Premiere Pro beta version 23.6.0 build 02 or later
  2. Open in beta, reconnect the media, and ensure the sequence looks correct.
  3. You may choose to just work in Beta –or– save and open in 23.4

Workaround #3 – XML

  1. Export XML (File > Export > Final Cut Pro XML) from the original system that has properly connected media.
  2. Import the XML into a new project on the new system and reconnect the media

* Please take note – not all aspects of the sequence will be reproduced by the XML

Workaround #4 – revert to Premiere Pro 23.3

  1. Open Creative Cloud Desktop app
  2. Click on All Apps
  3. Find Premiere Pro
  4. From the three dots on the right, choose “Other versions”
  5. Choose 23.3

Hello all! This is my first post here on the forum, as I've tried to find a solution online but am at a complete loss.

I'm video editor working on social media clips for a stand-up comedian. I primarily edit 1-2 min crowdwork videos on my home computer (a custom-built PC), then once a week I transfer the sequences to an external hard drive, then over to my client's computer (a Mac) for final touches and posting.

My process has been as follows:

File > Project Manager > Collect Files and Copy to a New Location > Then I'll save it to my harddrive, and download it onto the Mac.

However, occasionally when I view the sequences on the Mac, some of the audio and video is out of sync. Not just out of sync, every single Clip is playing the same segment of the source video: the very beginning. Every one of the affected Clips has the little white triangle in the corner, indicating the start-point, and the red numbers indicating the video is out of sync with its linked audio. [In the attached image, it is only effecting V1 and A2/A5, all from the same source]

I've tried making the clips offline, and re-linking them, but to no avail. I can't seem to find anyone else discussing the problem, and I'm not sure if it's a Bug or an issue with my export or project manager settings.

I'd love some help, if anybody knows anything, please help!

Brief Addendum: Although this problem doesn't occur when I load up the project on my home computer, if I make the clips offline and relink them, it happens here too...

Hi, I have a large project with about a dozen sequences, and everything has been working perfectly until I opened the project today. All of the extracted audio clips (that I edited in Audition) have reset to the beginning of the audio file, making them completely out of sync with their video clips.

Here's an example of the issue: Audio Issue.mp4 (I also attached it)

In this clip, I used the same extracted audio .wav file and linked it to the video, and edited it. Each audio clip was supposed to be a different part of the same .wav file, but now all of them start at the beginning of the .wav file. This issue applies to every sequence that uses extracted audio that I edited in Audition, but none of the clips that use the original video's audio.

The only thing that has changed since the last time I opened the project is that I moved the project folder and renamed it, but Premiere had no trouble re-linking everything, and I actually tried moving everything back to the original location (and quitting without saving) and it still had the same issue, even on an older version of the prproj file.

I use Premiere Pro version 23.4 (as of now the latest version) on macOS Ventura 13.3.1, using an Apple M1 Max.

I have the same issue. I'm also using PPro 23.4. I checked it on my surface pro (Win11) and on my macbook pro with intel chip on macOS Ventura 13.2.1.

I have multiple projects with this now and also need help urgently.

Thanks and best regards

I'm working with another editor on a project using the clip level transcription tools in premeire pro. We're both using Premiere Pro 23.4. He's on Mac OS and I'm on Windows 11.

Due to the size of the project we generated proxies for everything. All has been working well until we tried to relink to the full resolution media and that's when the problems started.

When trying to relink to the original files the clip's timecode shifts or goes to the first frame of the source clip for all the clips in the timeline.

I did some digging on Adobe's site and found that it is indeed a bug in version 23.4

Has anyone esle run into this problem? If so, what's been your workaround? I'm hoping it isn't as painful as manually readjusting every clip in the timeline. I've tried the workaround suggest by Adobe (create an xml, revert to previous version of Premiere), but it still isn't working.

Only current workarounds are to export XMLs when going back and forth or revert to 23.3. Hopefully this is patched soon.

That's what I was afraid of. Hopefully its fixed soon indeed! Does anyond know if its just related to transcriptions at the clip level or as a whole (sequence and clip level)? I have yet to do more testing to see if both methods are affected.

Side note: I would love to know if there are any good resources out there for best practices for air tight proxy workflows. I've done a little bit of digging online, but haven't had much luck in finding any good info on best practices for smooth proxy workflows.

Yes! This is what happened. All the cuts in the audio files make the in points are the first frame instead of where they were cut. In my case I'm in another country with my laptop so I couldn't access the project in the "original" computer. I had to spend hours recreating the original cuts and I assume I will need to finish the project in the laptop even if I return to my country and have access to my desktop computer before finishing the project.

Confirming cpening the 23.4 project in a fresh install of the beta app solved the issue for me to. Note if you have any AE dynamic links it requries the AE beta app to relink those too.

Not sure if this workaround requires all my colleagues to be on the beta apps for shared projects too, but I'm sure Adobe is hard at work with a stable patch version. Weird how this bug seems to rear its head every few years - I remember having it a couple of times over the last decade.

If you can, download the public beta version. Your media should re-link with the correct in/out points. It workded for me.

Can't install betas since I'm working with a corporate account + corporate laptop with restricted access. Official release fixing this bug is urgent and necessary.

Hi guys! If there's anyone out there who experienced what I'm experiencing right now, I really need your help. When I decided to move my video project from my MacBook Pro laptop to my external hard drive with all of its media (my A Roll, B Roll, etc.) and then open the project again, the clips that I cut and pasted to the timeline was in a different part of the original clip(s). For example, I have an interview clip (my A Roll - duration 15mins), and I cut the 2:30 to 3:10 clip and pasted it into the timeline. I saved it and moved the project to my external hard drive, and when I opened it again, the clip was now from 0:00 to 0:48. Interestingly, the cut clips were the same length as the one I cut before saving it.

Has anyone had any idea to revert my project to the right part of the clip? Is this an issue with the new version of the premiere pro?

There's a now known issue in PP 23.4, which has caused something similar. I looked for the main thread but couldn't find it, here's a link to something similar. Have a look around, and there should be discussion about it.

Same thing happened to me. Everything was working fine until I have it to my colourer on another pc and anything went out of sync. All the audio went out place, and the worst part is that the in and out points in the actual clips are all messed up. For example if I wanted a clip to start at 10s through a clip, premiere pro starts it from the very beginning. Very frustrating. And yes, everything works fine on my pc.

I am having this same issue, except in my case the sync moves way more than a few seconds. I edited a project at my home and it was working perfectly. I then went on a trip and brought my laptop, I connected the same external SSD with the same project and now the project is all out of synced. It is driving me nuts.
