Question

Has the ripple edit changed?

I'm trimming the in-point of a clip with the Ripple Edit tool, but as I drag my cursor the clip shrinks in real time. I seem to remember it not updating until I released the mouse — similar to how trimming with the Selection tool works. Has this behavior always been live, or is there a setting I'm missing?

I wrote about this in a recent Tool Tip Tuesday for Adobe Premiere Pro: New Ripple Trim Behavior in Premiere 26 … I like this change and I encourage you to give it a try as it provides realtime feedback as to what you’re trimming, not waiting until you release the mouse. You can still have Premiere snap to the playhead if snapping is enabled.

Do you know if there’s a way to disable this? My computer can’t handle the real time edit preview, and it’s basically rendered the ripple edit tool useless.

I do not think there is any way to disable this, as this is part of a new, more modern and more responsive timeline.

Personally, I don't use this Ripple trim tool dragging in the timeline very often. I like to use the Sequence > Trim Edit tool and dynamically trim with JKL keys. As an alternative, there are quite a few other ways to trim in Premiere that can often be a lot faster than clicking and dragging with a Ripple tool. Those are helpful to learn as well if you don't know them already.
