Question

How to remove 'banding'?

Hello,

Can anyone guide me how to resolve banding in PP? I shot with Black Magic 4k. I have added 100 Blur as part of my Color Correction, but I don't think that is the cause.

hehe... I think I've chewed on this bone long enough... here's the latest....

I got rid of the gaussian blur thing and started fresh with in focus still image... ( with no banding apparent )… and reduced saturation to zero... and then played with contrast, pivot (normal color wheels), Then log mode high range adjustment ( to help highlights blow out a little ) more adjustment to try and get a glow, and midtone detail ( what looks like blur )….

    And got this....

DREAM B AND WHITE - YouTube

that export is mp4 H264 uploaded to youtube.

is hard to see banding unless full scale 1080p and you sorta have to be looking for it... cause when you 'play' it it's not so noticeable.

For super pro work this would not be acceptable I don't think... so now it's down to camera settings, debayering, and the whole workflow ...

    but I'm done.

I think you're right.. and I have a feeling your export settings might fix it...

just for fun I put your still image ( with no banding ) into a resolve timeline full HD.. and added a bunch of gaussian blur and exported it as mp4 H264 and I am seeing banding

    I'm totally bamboozled.

I think it has something to do with the blurring. Here is the original. and I can't see banding here.

don't forget.. when exporting stuff ( when changing settings and exporting to see if the changes fixed something ) you can use the work area bar (WAB) to select just what is troublesome ( in this case, luckily, it's just that one clip ) and export just that part... to see if stuff is fixed..

when you render it makes video previews.. that's what I wanna see, and those boxes,  if you can post it...

oh. hmmmmm.  Well, that's good. I kinda thought you were seeing it in other stuff too. So, I'm glad you're not.

I am curious though... are you using proxies ?  Probably not relevant but I'm kinda curious about you using that stuff in PPro.

the motion tracking thing kinda might cache something for that and so that might be relevant... so now I wonder what your render settings are …

Anyway, this is ppro cs6 so yours will be slightly different.. but please post screenshots of your sequence settings ( wanna see what you got for rendering stuff ) and also your export settings ( wanna see what boxes you are checking etc... )

can you try importing that footage into After Effects if you have it?

if so, what's the result there at 16-bit color?

just to try to narrow down the issue...

What format/codec did you use, and what GPU settings do you have in the Project settings dialog?

Would be good to get info on the source material … do you know how to use Mediainfo ??  That's for windows... there's something for mac but I don't know what it is.  Basically it gives you all the info about your source footage ( video and sound too if that's embedded ).

Did I read that you are using a bmpcc 4k ??   I have the old one... only 1080p, raw ( cinemaDNG) or prores to SD card … so I use the raw thing. Unfortunately I don't think adobe likes cinemaDNG. Not sure. Prores 10 bit 4.2.2 would be nice to have as a source...

Don't know what the new bmpcc 4k can do... let us know.

You meant, I think, that your export was full HD H264 … but now it would be good to know the source.
