I have an issue with the latest version of premiere working fine but progressivley getting slower, then filling all available ram and disk swap, I get a memory error on mac with premiere pro usung in excess of 100GB editing standard 4K footage, footage that never used to have issues until this version.

My system

Macbook pro 16 inch, 32`gb ram M1 Max

latest OS (13.2.1 (22D68))

Premiere 23.2

Its happened on multiple projects, some new some old.

I've had to revert to the previous version for my own sanity.

Does anyone else have this issue?

Correct answer Bruce Bullis

The original issue that generated this thread, has been fixed. It was related to memory usage around VST plugins.

[I'm not discounting the possibility that you're encountering a different issue...]

Do you have third party VST plugins installed?

Hi Bruce

We have exactly the same issue here! Mac OS 14.4.1, Premiere 24.3 , Mac Pro M1 , 16GB RAM ... plenty of storage headroom and speed.  Premiere launches and within seconds crashes with an out of memory message.

The project was started in Premiere 23 and was fine, but the application was updated ( grrr...) . Now we cant open it in the oder version. There's not even tme before Premiere crashes to export an XML!

Right now it feels like the project is in jeapordy!

Any advice?

@Bruce Bullis Yes, I will do that.  Thanks for looking into it!

Yes we have (no repro), and we'd like to try with your project (no media necessary). I've emailed you a link to some private upload space; could we have a project containing the sequence, with effects applied, that reliably eats all your memory?

@Bruce Bullis  Have you tried playing down a timeline with the lumetri scopes up?  This is what is triggering the leak for me.

No change to the update we've provided, above (see Fergus' post): While we do care about the issue and have spent significant(!) time and effort chasing it, no one (inside or outside Adobe) has come up with steps which reliably reproduce the issue.

We believe users are seeing it; we have not been able to make it happen.

I've been waiting 10 months for any sort of update.

Adobe could care less about your problems.

I had to switch to DaVinci. You'll be glad you did.

I've downgraded this week to ver 23.0.0 and have had no memory leaks so far on my M1Max Pro 64GB

None yet; see Fergus' post.

Samantha, if you can provide steps that reliably reproduce this issue, we'd love to see them.

I've been having this issue since switching to Premiere Pro 2024.1.0.  I'm on an M2 with 192 GB of RAM.  All available memory will fill up when using PP 2024 and I never experiene this on the same computer using PP 2023.  I believe I have narrowed it down to the Lumetri Scopes panel.  When I play down a timeline with my scopes up, the memory usage soars and quickly fills up all available RAM and the app forces you to quit.  If I close the panel and reboot premiere with the panel closed, memory appears to hold steady at about 18-22GB while playing down the timeline.  This really needs to be fixed.  I need to have my scopes up all the time since I edit for broadcast.
