Multi cam view showing zoomed clips when they are different resolutions

I have some UHD clips that I want to edit in an 1080p sequence so that I can zoom in for some shots without losing quality.

The problem is that my multicam sequence will be UHD too. When I drag it in the 1080p sequence i "set it to frame size" since it is zoomed in initially and all is good. But looking at the multicam view, the two clips in it are left zoomed in while the Multicam preview shows a correctly zoomed out image.

Is there a way to solve this?

 

The only way for the clips in the multi cam view to show up correctly is:

1) to work in an UHD timeline but this would defeat the purpose of zooming in the shot since i would be scaling over 100 this way.

2) in my 1080p sequence go into each multicam clip and manually scale down the clips that make up the multicam to 50 but this is not a solution as I have a lot of clips and I think this would also put the clips at 100 in the 1080p timeline sequence so again I would lose the ability to zoom in the shot without losing quality.

3) work in an UHD sequence so that the multicam matches the resolution and after I finish the edit change the sequence to 1080p before export. But this is also filled with issues as i'll have to watch out and check for things that do not scale properly.

    When I've had that, after the source is synced, I'd open the "Sequence Settings" from project right-click / context menu. Likely you'll need to set the sequence size to HD from UHD.

     

    Then Use 'Open in Timeline' from the context menu in the project panel.

     

    In source sequence I move all the clips from each camera to it's own layer, that way all the clips from each camera show in the same, consistent spot in the multi-cam source monitor. I haven't had one for awhile, but the newish "Simplify Sequence" command again from the context menu, seems like it would help.

     

    Once I've simplified my timeline, I just select all the clips on the UHD camera track(s) and 'Set to Frame Size', that sets them all to 50%.

     

    Then as normal, right-click the sequence in the project and select 'New Sequence from Clip'.

    Myer, thanks for the response. 

    Yes your solution works, even if it is somewhat convoluted but it only works on a per clip basis. 

    I mean i have to do this process for each multicam clip that i have and i have plenty :). That's why we need to be able to modify the scale of the Multicam View independently from the Preview.

    I didn't try it this way, but it's probably would work. Thus simply open in the timeline the multi-cam source sequence, change the sequence settings to HD, then ctrl-A select all clips and 'Set to Frame Size'. 

    You won't have a pristine clean source sequence like the way I described, but it would take 10-20 seconds to do it this way.

    Hi @goguvarra,

    Interesting problem. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if the community can offer some workarounds for you. Here's what I would do. Cut the sequence in 4K first for content. After locking the content, I'd flatten the sequence, then change the sequence settings to HD. Then, I'd go in and do all my 4K > HD repositions. Would that work?

    Thank for your suggestion Kevin, but that s what I was proposing in my post at point 3 albeit without the flattening part. 🙂

    1) But wouldn't it be much easier if you guys could somehow provide a button or a menu command for the Multicam View that changes its zoom setting (or scale, or render it half size or something) separately from the Multicam Preview Monitor?

    2) Or maybe just let us select multiple multicamera sequences or multicamera clips if I already have them in the timeline  and somehow click an option that would let me "set to frame size" the clips inside the multicam. Because the clips inside the multicam are UHD and my working timeline is HD they would scale to 50. If we could do this in a batch for multiple clips without having to manually enter each multicam by CTRL clicking the clip it would be AWESOME. This is the main problem, modifying multiple clips at once!!!

    But of course this would still mean I won t benefit from the zooming of the UHD clip because the scale would be 100 instead of 50 in the timeline. But at least i could flatten the clips in the end and do it then so overall would be easier.

    In conclusion the first suggestion would be the best 🙂

    I know it is probably not so easy to implement this but it would sure help us a lot especially when it is a common enough workflow to shoot 4k and use 1080p to be able to benefit from zooming and downsampling.
