Question

My students' Premiere Pro project files have vanished

I teach a video class at a university. This semester, three students have had their project files (.prproj) disappear. Two of these students were storing their work in the Cloud, and one had it stored on a local drive. These students lost hours of work. One student is in tears.

Why is this happening?

We have tried:

Search for ".prproj" (nothing)

File > Open Recent (nothing)

Open the Adobe Creative Cloud app and look at Files, and Deleted (nothing)

I am now telling them to only story files locally, and make a back up file to store somewhere else. I'm also advising them to periodically export media of their project as a reference file in case they have to build their entire project over. They shouldn't have to do this.

Thanks for the details.

A day or two later when they opened up Premiere the project wasn't listed anywhere.

Confirming: Even when the students view their CC files in a web browser, there are no .prproj or .mov files?

>Auto-save is currently set to: user/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Team Projects Local Hub/Auto Saves

Any local auto-save'd projects, from which the student(s) could recover?

Here are the specifics:

Version 25.1.0

Mac OS 15.0

Apple M4

16GB RAM

Video was .MOV files from a Canon DSLR, 1920x1080

Workflow details: My student was assembling a music video with the song in Audio channel 1, and multiple clips of video they shot sequenced in video chanel 1, with dissolves. There was a title still in Video channel 2 using Screen blending mode.

The student had most of the project edited one day, hit save, the project was saved to Adobe Cloud. A day or two later when they opened up Premiere the project wasn't listed anywhere.

These computers are in a shared lab. Each student user has to log in with their school username and password. They also have to log in to Adobe Creative Cloud which they each have a license to through their software fees. Each time they log out and back in, there are aspects of the computers which are reset. We currently have Adobe CC set to not automatially update software.

Auto-save is currently set to: user/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Common/Team Projects Local Hub/Auto Saves

That sounds awful.

PPro contains zero code that deletes .prproj files; I'm hopeful that the projects remain, somewhere on your/their systems.

>Two of these students were storing their work in the Cloud

Specifically, where? 🙂

>Search for ".prproj" (nothing)

Ok, where were they stored? If the .prproj files were stored within their User directories, are they using something like ActiveDirectory, to manage those User directories?

>File > Open Recent (nothing)

As Stan explained, those are just shortcuts; PPro will remove them from the menu, if the .prproj files are no longer available at the previous location.

I'm also advising them to periodically export media of their project as a reference file

In the Project Settings (for each project), an auto-save directory is specified; to what directory are your students saving their project auto-saves? [Confirming: In the students' PPro Prefs --> AutoSave, they are automatically saving backup projects every N minutes, right?]

Also of interest: If the .prproj files were stored on a network volume, did the name or mounting method used for that volume, change?

Hi @chrxtopher2112 ,

Welcome to the Premiere Pro forums!  We’re happy you’ve reached out.  Can you give me a bit more info about the workflow they're using?  Which version of Premiere are they using, and was it updated mid-project?  Is there also nothing in the autosave vault usually found in Documents > Premiere > v# > AutoSave?  Where are the scratch disks set to?
