No Closed Captions in Premiere Pro 2020

Has anyone had any luck getting closed captions to work in PP 2020?

I've tried every caption type, and open captions is the only one that works.

I tested some closed captions and set it up with 708 but when i check the settings it had been changed to Teletext.

Joey, I am having no difficulty seeing 708 captions. I found my issue: in PR 2020 (but not 2019), creating a 708 with 59.94 fps (drop or nondrop) or 60 fps crashes PR. Other framerates are okay, and I can view them in the source and program monitors.

Sorry, Joey, you are correct. I was distracted. And now I have discovered that I am back to 708 streams (or something) crashing PR. Argh!

For captions, use the Modify -> Captions, not Modify -> Interpret footage. Does the pixel size match? NTSC DV, 720x480, or what?

Under Modify -> Captions, there is no way to view the pixel size when using CEA-708. That only appears when I switch to Open Captions. I have never worked with Open Captions before. Will switching to Open Captions impact editing and exporting the CC? Or does it function virtually the same way as CEA-708?

Okay, Joey. The next thing to double check is that the sequence pixel size/par matches the caption stream pixel size.

I changed it from D1/DV NTSC (0.9091) to Square Pixels (1.0) because the video file is (1.0). Unfortunately, the subtitles still aren't visible.

Joey, please confirm that your Closed Caption Display settings (under the Program Monitor wrench icon) are set to Enable and to 708, service 1.

Hi Stan, Thank you for your quick response. Unfortunately, those are the settings I have and it still isn't working.

My Settings haven't been changed to Teletext, and they still aren't showing up.

Weird. I couldn't test, because I crashed everytime I created a 708 stream! Fixed it with a reinstall.

The default at that point was 708. Go figure.

That explains it!

I installed 2020 with the option to keep preferences from the previous version, but obviousely that caption setting wasn't kept.

Thanks Ann.

As Ann says, the Program Monitor (and source monitor) wrench icon settings must be set to the type of caption stream and subtype. By default the last I looked, PR set it to Closed Caption 708. If you have a 608 stream, you will not see it. You just say that the button is enabled.

Thanks Stan.

Yes, it's always been set to 708 for me too, and I always opt for 708 when creating captions, so it just worked all the time.

But as Ann discovered, the 2020 update has switched the default to teletext.

Thanks for the help.

Been testing somewhat for the Closed Captions.: guessing the stream is set to Teletext instead of 708.

You can change this in the settings in the Program Window (wrench).
