Premiere 23.1 crashes opening project files

Just updated today to the latest Premiere Pro 23.1 and now it doesn't open ANY of my project files, crashing during the process approximately 60-70% in judging by the progress bar. It is either crashes, or simply freezes (the progra, is supposedly working but does nothing) and doesn't open it. WTF is going on and how can I fix it (aside of rolling back version 23, of course, which I will do right now cause I have work to do, but seriously, what a mess!).

Have removed all third-party plugins. Installed version 23.2 and then installed the latest versions of my plug-ins back one by one checking if the file is still loading. It seems like the culprit was Red Giant Universe, which is not surprising, cause their coders seems to be worse then the Indian ones - such a bad piece of software for such enourmous price! Anyway, FOR NOW it seems I have solved the problem, thanks to Gabriel. Will see if it will stay this way 😆

Yea, stability and performance wise Premiere left much to be desired, but its ecosystem is great and there are tons of templates and tutorials for it. Personally I have no desire to invest in learning a new software (wink wink, we know what it is ;)) if Premiere is working more or less allright. But sometimes its glitches driving me crazy. I will try your solution though, will delete plug-ins for Premiere and see if it will work stable, then reinstall them one by one to see what is causing the problem.

By logic it seem something wrong with the plugin you are using, maybe try to uninstall or disable them all while trying to work on this project or roll back to previous versions of those plugins, because sometimes they can crash the application. For the rest for me Premiere is starting to have some weirds bug aswell, it almost never had a version that was really stable. It need serious work on performance and realiability. In my opionion the code is too old they just need to rewrite the software for scratch to make it buttery smooth. If it continues like that i think i will jump ship.

Man, your solution has helped me to open the file and I was able to work on it. BUT, after I closed Premiere and tried to open the file again to make some corrections - the same thing happened - crash, and later just freeze. Something is still wrong in Premiere, I think. But we are maybe close to the solution? I dunno, and rolled back to version 23 for the time being.

Yesterday my premiere 23.1 - 2 3 every version (!) started to crash for every project i was opening, the solution for me was to press shift + control, or only shift (don't remember) while click on PP icon, then clear all the plugin cache and premiere cache and then it worked again. Try to disable Cuda aswell to see if helps

I'm with you all the way - I'm fairly new to Premiere and have a terrible memory due to temporal lobe epilepsy, so even if I am starting a new project in the new software I'm paying for, I often need to look back at my past learnings to recall my M.O. created in v22 & v23.

That story may be particular to me, but I'm sure there are others out there who want to copy a part out of a past project (such as complex animated logos) without hitting a wall.

I do understand your suggestion, Neil, and it has merit, but in my experience Windows of late is extremely stable if your hardware is quality and I didn't do re-installs since the days of Windows XP or even Windows 98 probably 🙂 For me the OS I install on a freshly assembled PC works fine till the day I decide to upgrade it significantly, like, changing everything 🙂 And as I was installing nothing new, except new games, inbetween version 23 and 23.1, I think it is Adobe's glitch, not a third-party software which prevents it to work correctly. Also, logic dictates that this third-party software should also affect other Adobe apps, but only Premiere is behaving this way and only while opening my project files, cause I can start a new file and work fine, but this is not what I need. And also if some third party software prevents the NEW version of Premiere working as intended, why it does not affect the version 23 (and before)?

Anyway, I hope that some devs will reply to me about what I can do, cause right now I am frustrated, and even though version 23 is good and has everythin I need to work efficiently, being "behind" is not a good feeling.

This bug section is the means to communicate with the devs now. Thankfully they do monitor this, and even reply in a number of the bug posts. Much more so than ever before, which is a huge improvement.

But still they don't reply to every post here, no clue about that.

My suggestion was just as a practical matter. As I've known several others that have posted about doing wipe/OS reinstalls, followed by installing all Adobe stuff prior to anything else, that fixed their issues.

I'm not someone that wants to reinstall my OS routinely either! Although I did do it once because of major issues with several Adobe apps, and it did work. Back about 2017 or so.

And I've got friends who every six months have a scheduled OS wipe/reinstall. They insist it keeps their rigs running fast. And that it takes them about 2-3 hours for the whole process, as they have everything in their setup planned around this.

I find that ... um ... not inviting. Probably a lot like you.

But ... there is a possibility, if you wiped/reinstalled, that whatever is the problem would go away. Ergo I mentioned it as an option. There are numerous sound card drivers & "enhancement tools", all sorts of other things from other companies & apps, that have had buggy problems on some systems with Adobe apps.

Neil, I am not going to do a clean install of the OS to just test the theory that after that everything will work as intended. Cause not only it is a work for at least 1 day to install and tweak everything back as before, but also because obviously the problem is not in my system, but in Adobe software. To me it is obvious that they change something in the version 23.1 and up for it to stop opening correctly files from version 23 not only on my system, but for some other people as well. I am sure it is isolated problem for an unfortunate few, but problem none the less.

So is there any channel to contact developers directly for them to look this problem for me? I can provide them with all the information or help determine the source of the problem by installing some software maybe to look what is going on while Premiere trying to open the file. As a paying customer I would like to get support with this matter.

Another workaround MAY be is that I will send my project files to them and they will try to open in the latest version, and if successfull save them and send new saves back to me so I will try to open them on my system.

Even un-installing/cleaning with the Adobe CC Cleaner tool didn't  help  ... wow.

At this point, as another user, all I can say is you have all my sympathy!

Something is uniquely and seriously off in your system somewhere for this to be happening. I know some people do a fresh wipe/OS installation every six months or so just to ensure nothing weird gets in.

Only needed to wipe and re-install the OS once myself in the last decade. But that might help. It's even more of a pain than running that Cleaner.
