Question

Premiere killed my .wav file ?

Hi all,

I have been laying out a voiceover for a video I am working on. The audio is a stack of wav files from a tascam recorder sd card.

All of my files except for one work without problem, and have no issue with playback.

Out of nowhere, the clip from one file stopped playing audio into the video, when just minutes before there was no issue. I am still in a pretty preliminary phase, so no effects are active on the audio, the track isnt muted and nothing else is soloing. The waveform is still visible.

I ejected and reloaded the sd card, unlinked and re-linked the files. Still no sound.

Then, I checked the original file, and suddenly it wont play it's audio through preview or VLC. The file duration and size info still exists, but the audio is lost.

Does anyone know what happened here, or if there's any chance I can recover my file?

<working with Premiere seems to have led to this corruption..>

No not the program, it's working directly off a SD card is known to give issues.

Yes, it used to work, as I was editing it down and syncing it with video. I do not think it was the last file recorded, I did an additional (worse) take. Now I know to move files off the SD card. The file wont play back on the recorder anymore, either. Its frustrating, though, that working with Premiere seems to have led to this corruption..

Hi, I tried doing this when the playback first failed, but it seems like the file became affected, regardless of the source.

You need to move all the files from the SD card onto the harddrive and then relink with the files on the harddrive.

Never edit from a SD card.

Hi @echoeecchhooeeeccchhhooo,

Thanks for sending that file over.  It does look like this WAV file is corrupt.  Are you sure this specific file has worked before? Does it happen to be the last file on the card? Sometimes, if the card isn't closed out properly on the Tascam, the last file can have issues. Because the file has size, I wonder if that might be the issue.  There is a chance that if you put it back in the recorder and try closing it out again, it will work, but not always.

I also really do not recommend working off SD cards.  While technically possible, editing directly from SD cards is slower than SSDs or external hard drives, and the constant reading and writing during editing can stress them. This can lead to performance issues and even card corruption over time—just something to be aware of.

Hi Rach, thanks for the help. I am editing off the SD card, but trying to move the file to my desktop didn't help, the sound is still gone.

I am editing on Premiere 25.00. I have an Apple M3 Max. I will message you a link now to the file.

Hi @echoeecchhooeeeccchhhooo

I'm sorry to hear you're having problems.  Are you editing off the SD card?  My first suggestion would be to move the media to a hard drive or wherever your media lives.  Working off an SD card can cause slow speeds; if there is file corruption, you can always go back and check the original file on the card to see if it also has corruption issues.

Can you DM a link to the problem WAV file for us to check out?  What version of Premiere are you working in?  If you have time, please give the team a few more details. See: How do I write a bug report?

I hope we can help you soon. Sorry for the frustration!
