Question

Hokay ... you're using the most nastiest format/codec for editing possible to use at this time. Bar none. And the DJI drones are about the worst ... longest groups basically of any of the long-GOP creating devices, and often use a partial i-frame to make the writing to card by the specialized on-board chip faster.

And it makes the computing load for playback and especially editing even worse.

And you're working on a laptop. I find Intel's listing of "cores" to be almost fraudulent, at least for heavy computing like NLEs need. Your rig has what, 6 "performance" cores? Forget the others, you really have slightly more capability than a 'regular' 6 core CPU for NLE workloads.

That GPU is a laptop version ... which has some of the same bits as the desktop verision, but is never as capable. My desktop and laptop both have a 2080Ti ... and the laptop version can only actually process about half the data in practical terms per second of that desktop 2080Ti.

And 16 GB of RAM is pretty minimalist for doing anything in Premiere, and you're demanding long-GOP encoding also. Yowza.

So it's not a particularly "hot" computer. And you're running the nastiest media made. Seriously, you'd probably get better results with 8k RED media.

Add to that "mission creep" in the demands of each new version of heavy apps for hardware to keep up with the new stuff in the app. Premiere 25.x will require more hardware than 24.x.

And you're doing a three-track multicam with two FHD tracks and a UHD long-GOP track simultaneously.

One of the things that was mentioned by a dev some time ago is, under certain circumstances, if the computer runs out of hardware "room" for 'hardware processing' of h.264, things can get dumped into software only. Something like that might be happening.

And you might consider making 1/4 res proxies of the drone media.

Not necessarily—only the 4K video playing on the timeline. For Full HD videos, I noticed that when using Time Interpolation: Optical Flow, it used to render in real time and showed a yellow bar. Now, it shows a red bar, indicating that it’s no longer being dynamically rendered by the GPU.

Any effects in use?

  • Issue - When editing 4K videos, I notice that the timeline becomes laggy. I opened the task manager to analyze performance and noticed that the processor was at 100% while the graphics card was at 0%.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 25.1.0 (build 73)
  • Operating system - Windows 11 home
  • System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
    • CPU: 13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13650HX
    • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Laptop GPU
    • GPU driver: 32.0.15.6636
    • RAM: 16 GB RAM DDR5
    • Hard Drive: 512 GB SSD NVMe PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2 2280.
  • Video format: 4K H.265 3840×2160  30 fps (Drone DJI mini 3 PRO).
  • Workflow details: I’m working on a multicam sequence with 3 video tracks—2 from DSLR cameras in 1080p and 1 in 4K from a drone (this is where the problem occurs). I’m using Premiere’s preset for DSLR at 29.97 fps.
  • Steps to reproduce - (Very important!) :
1 - Scrubbing through the video on the timeline causes it to freeze.
2 - Analyzing processor and GPU performance shows that only the CPU is being used.
3 - Checking GPU-accelerated effects reveals that they are not being accelerated.
  • Expected result - Premiere should be utilizing the GPU more and relying less on the CPU, as it did in previous versions.
  • Actual result -  A bottleneck and timeline lag occurred, making the workflow impossible.

We need your full OS and hardware information, including CPU, GPU, number and type of drives in use, specifics of your media format/codec and framerate and framesize, and what made it.

Any effects you are using.

Post that and you'll get assistance.
