Premiere Pro 2026 lagging on playback after basic edits - trying to identify hardware bottleneck
Hi everyone,
I'm experiencing playback lag in Adobe Premiere Pro 2026 (v26.2.0.65), even with a very short video and relatively simple edits.
At the beginning, playback was smooth. However, after making a few cuts and basic edits, playback started lagging significantly. The timeline becomes choppy, even when I lower the playback resolution (1/2, 1/4).
Important details:
- The UI remains responsive (I can click tools, move around, etc.)
- The issue is specifically with video playback in the timeline
- The video is short and not heavily edited (just cuts so far)
Here is my current setup:
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
- Motherboard: Gigabyte A520M DS3H
- RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400MHz
- GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 (8GB VRAM)
- Storage: Kingston NV3 1TB NVMe (PCIe 4.0)
My goal is to understand which component is likely the bottleneck for Premiere Pro in this scenario, since I’m planning a hardware upgrade.
From your experience:
- Would this kind of lag be more related to CPU, RAM speed/capacity, or GPU?
- Is 16GB RAM at 2400MHz a limiting factor for Premiere in 2026?
- Does Premiere benefit more from CPU upgrades vs GPU in cases like this?
- Could this be related to codecs or playback settings instead of hardware?
Any insights or upgrade suggestions would be really appreciated.
Thanks!
