Premiere Pro 2026 lagging on playback after basic edits - trying to identify hardware bottleneck

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing playback lag in Adobe Premiere Pro 2026 (v26.2.0.65), even with a very short video and relatively simple edits.

At the beginning, playback was smooth. However, after making a few cuts and basic edits, playback started lagging significantly. The timeline becomes choppy, even when I lower the playback resolution (1/2, 1/4).

Important details:

  • The UI remains responsive (I can click tools, move around, etc.)
  • The issue is specifically with video playback in the timeline
  • The video is short and not heavily edited (just cuts so far)

Here is my current setup:

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5500
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte A520M DS3H
  • RAM: 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 2400MHz
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6600 (8GB VRAM)
  • Storage: Kingston NV3 1TB NVMe (PCIe 4.0)

My goal is to understand which component is likely the bottleneck for Premiere Pro in this scenario, since I’m planning a hardware upgrade.

From your experience:

  • Would this kind of lag be more related to CPU, RAM speed/capacity, or GPU?
  • Is 16GB RAM at 2400MHz a limiting factor for Premiere in 2026?
  • Does Premiere benefit more from CPU upgrades vs GPU in cases like this?
  • Could this be related to codecs or playback settings instead of hardware?

Any insights or upgrade suggestions would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

I’ve got the same problem. Or something similar.

Premiere runs for about 10 minutes, then the programme only responds intermittently.

What happens is that I play back the timeline and then can’t stop it. Or Premiere stops responding altogether. It looks as though the UI freezes. The video and audio carry on playing. Sometimes this happens even when no video is playing, just from using the software.

    My system:

    Asus Flow x16 laptop

    i9 13900H

    96GB RAM

    RTX 4070 8 GB

    My solution:

No video playback and restarting Premiere every 10 minutes. That’s great fun!

Playback quality is often dependent on the codec/bitrate of your video files. What are you working with here?

I was working with h264 but then I transcoded to prores proxy and the same issue. I also have the video tracked disabled whilst working with audio and resolution at ¼. I’m on the latest version of premiere and running a Mac Studio m1 ultra on os tahoe 26.3.1. I love the functionality in premiere but at the moment I am done to about 1 mouse click per second which is abysmal, and sometimes I am still lagging more. I have cleared cache and turned off ai functions.

That’s certainly not normal. Just out of curiosity, if you load up the default/demo media that comes with Premiere, does working with those files also have the same issues?

Same problem, this really is a joke. We can’t keep working like this, it's supposed to be a “professional” software. We pay through the nose for something that runs slower than iMovie

    Hi therodrigoc,

Sorry about the poor experience. Did the performance issues start after updating to the latest version? If so, does rolling back to the previous version help? Also, let us know the specifications of the media you are working with (format, frame rate & frame size).

    Thanks,
    Sumeet

Came here for the same issue… It immediately started after updating with the latest update. After a lot of frustration, I’ve uninstalled and re-installed a previous version (26.0.2). Back to working again (for now).
