Question

Premiere Pro CC 2018 won't import footage...

I'm trying to import footage through Media Browser and the program freezes half way through importing the file.  Also, the files take a very long time to show up in the Media Browser window.  Suggestions?

mp3's have never been a solid format for audio in PrPro ... easy to batch convert to wav files which work perfectly.

I have the same problem when importing videos from Lightroom Classic CC... I can not believe this failure...

I have reinstalled Premier 2017 but it is the same problem as Premier 2018...

I'm having a similar issue with Premiere 2018. When I import any footage be it 8k R3D, 4k Prores, png, jpg wav or really anything; I get the pinwheel and Premiere either crashes or it takes 10-20 minutes to import anything. I've tried going through the media browser, file/import and dragging directly through the finder. Same result for all techniques. I'm working off of a 10 gigabit shared network drive with 725mb/second read speed. So that isn't the issue. I wasn't having this problem with PPCC 2017. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this?

So far dragging is the only thing that's been working for me.

Hi, try this. It worked for me.

I have been encounter the same problem since I updated my OS to High Sierra 10.13.2. Im using CC 2018 and my Premiere keep on freezing while importing. Based on Adobe Customer Care replies, they said there are some issues with the OS problem encoding .ac3 format. So they suggest me to encode my AVCHD clips to ProRes.

So since I shot in 100fps and want to maintain the fps to match my source, and ProRes preset limitation only up to 60fps (in Pr, Prelude, Encoder), I decided to just ingesting the clips from Full HD AVCHD to HD (maintaining the fps). Then, it works fine for me. I able to import and drag clips without Premiere Pro crashing / froze again.

Same problem for me. Been going on since the past 2 updates. If I've got a folder of 8k R3D files it will either crash upon import or take 5 minutes to import. That being said, Premiere will still crash importing other formats too if there's enough of them.

Specs:

Windows 10 Pro version 1703

Intel Core i7-6950X

64GB Ram

AND I'm working off a USB-C drive so no reason for the lag.

Hi Matt_Falkenthal,

I've seen this issue with corrupt projects.

Have you tried this with a brand new project? If so and it's still not working, you can contact our agents to get assistance here: FAQ: How do I contact Adobe Support?

Thanks,
Kevin

Yes, this is with a new project as well. Seems to be worse the larger the file size is. Lags on R3D, MTS, and even 4K MP4's.

Hi RichardM,

I was speaking to the original poster in trying to close out this thread. If you are having trouble with importing files as a separate issue, please file a case with us directly. Here's how: FAQ: How do I contact Adobe Support?

Other people have solved this issue by importing footage into a brand new project.

Thank You,
Kevin

Having similar issues. Except I don’t even have to be in the process of importing through the Media Browser in Premiere. I can just have the browser tab open and scroll through the clips and it will freeze up on my 2016 MacBook Pro OS High Sierra. Most everything has run great working in premiere with this computer and now in the last few weeks I have had to import through the finder to premiere. It can be tough since a lot of my files are mxf and I need the browser to view the clips before importing. I have cleared media cache and no luck after. Still freezing up when going through the Media Browser in Premiere Pro CC 2018.

Exactly the same, here.  Did you find a fix?  When I open Media Browser and begin to scrub the thumbnails, it crashes.  I tried multiple different hard drives, even reinstalled the OS and the entire Creative Cloud set up (after being on chat with Adobe tech support for two hours).  So frustrating!

So an edit to my original post, now that I have more time.  I'm working with a directory of source material (RAID connected via USB3), all native Canon C300 footage in MXF format.  I shot this material in 2015 and have been working with it consistently in PPro.  Now, in PPro 2018, I am unable to use the Media Browser to import.  Sometimes I can import a clip or two (by right clicking on the clip and choosing import) but eventually, I'll get a persistent beach ball.  Then I'm hosed and have to kill the app.

This is on a 2017 iMac, latest versions of everything.  Two months ago, I would have told you that I've been working on PPro for years and never, ever, had a crash or freeze.  It was so rock solid.  I read tech support forums till my eyes hurt, and the only insights are from users with Adobe Techs like Kevin, above, offering nothing of value and clearly talking to people who know more about the work environments and software conditions of Adobe subscribers.  Nothing personal to Kevin, but Adobe seems incapable of confessing a flawed roll out, so we're left to find workarounds as a community.

I hope like hell they fix this soon.  It's taken Premiere Pro from trusted tool to a professional liability.  Shucks.

It sounds like there are a couple different issues being posted about in this thread. One is crashing on import, the other is long freeze/hangups immediately after import but before the imported files show up in the project. I have another thread about this specific issue and I'm wondering how many of you experiencing problems are having the same issue: Premiere freezes immediately after clip import.

I have found two things:

  1. Taking all my media offline before importing solves the problem and I can import additional clips just fine. Obviously this is not a solution or even a great workaround because it takes longer to relink everything. But it does suggest where the problem lies.
  2. So far I have only been able to replicate this in a large project full of .r3d files. It does not happen in similarly large projects containing other types of files. How many of you are working with RED footage?
  3. The amount of time Premiere hangs for seems to be directly related to the number or .r3d files in a project that are linked to their media. During the hang, Windows Resource Manager shows Premiere accessing pretty much all of the files in the project and the hard drive is spinning like crazy.

I'm wondering if some of you can test #1 and we can track down if this is the same issue.

Currently, I believe that importing any file into a project is causing Premiere to read every single .r3d clip again from the hard drive. The import process does not fully complete until this is done.

I have a friend testing if this is true on the Mac version as well using the same dataset and will report back.

I have found a thread on reduser discussing the same issue: Premiere CC freezes on Import
